Tonight's closing performance of Slash by Emily Allan and Leah Hennnessey is SOLD OUT!

We will have a waitlist at the box office 30 minutes prior to curtain for any unclaimed seats. Slash hits the stage TONIGHT at 8pm.

***

Betty and Veronia have tried everything to cure their crippling depression and existential despair. Everything, that is, except acting out ho******ic fanfiction.

“Prankish genius”- The Paris Review
“The ultimate fanfiction play”- Syfy
“A wildly entertaining ho******ic extravaganza”- Paper Magazine
“It’s fast and campy ,and as clever as anything the New York stage has seen in some
time”- Vogue

Cue a Russian doll of stories slashing John Lennon x Paul McCartney, Susan Sontag x Camille Paglia, Trotsky x Stalin, Byron x Shelley & Kirk x Spock…

As the layers of fantasy multiply, the girls are left questioning what really drives their games, and to what end.

Slash is a two woman comedy written, adapted, directed, and performed by Emily Allan and Leah Hennessey.

The Blond (Emily Allan) and The Dark Haired One (Leah Hennessey) attempt to transcend the banality of identity and the terror of consciousness through cosplay, anglophilia, critical theory and song. Incorporating fan fictional pairings of iconic duos such as Lennon/McCartney, Byron/Shelley and Betty/Veronica, as well as meta commentary by camp portrayals of infamous second wave feminists Camile Paglia, Andrea Dworkin and Joanna Russ, Slash is a “pop feminist tour de force” (Office Magazine) about the erotics of collaboration and friendship.

Preston Sturges on Remember the Night (note- it the last script he wrote before he started directing): "It had quite a lot of schmaltz [sentiment], a good dose of schmerz [pain, grief] and just enough schmutz [dirt] to make it box office."

One of the finest -- and least known -- Christmas movies, Remember the Night is also arguably director Mitchell Leisen's best film. It benefits immensely from a sterling Preston Sturges screenplay that manages to mine all the emotion and sentiment from its "different worlds" story without ever falling into bathos. Needless to say, the screenplay is also chock-full of the incisive wit, ear for a nifty turn of phrase, and insightful character studies that are a trademark of Sturges' later classic comedies. He is one of the few writers of the period who could have skated as close to the edge of soapy melodrama as the twin homecoming sequences without falling over. The film's heartwarming tugs are genuine, achieved with a bare minimum of manipulation. Leisen deserves credit for serving the material so adeptly. If the first courtroom scene is a bit awkward, it's the only place in the film where the director falters. He is helped, of course, by the irreplaceable Barbara Stanwyck. As usual, the actress is curiously radiant, a tough girl whose softness is totally believable. Fred MacMurray is a perfect foil for her, strong but tender, a man whose niceness is never cloying and whose toughness is tempered with mercy. The rest of the cast gives excellent support, especially Beulah Bondi, Elizabeth Patterson, and Sterling Holloway. An excellent film, Night deserves a place in the holiday pantheon beside such better-known titles as Miracle on 34th Street and The Bells of St. Mary's.

Except for the fact that she lives in 13th-century Italy and she’s being followed by this really annoying guy Dante who keeps writing poems about her. Loosely based on Beatrice Portinari, Dante’s muse and the figure at the center of Vita Nuova and The Divine Comedy, BEATRICE is a story of Heaven and Hell, love and loss, and a woman ahead of her time.

ARL is open to all theater makers and is a great way to find a fun theater community of cool theater people reading cool theater things!

November 27 - 6pm

This class is to give anyone who works with and around sound a solid understanding of the fundamental principles of SOUND. We will look at everything from acoustic theory, dsp, how hardware works, useful software, and everything in between! There will be an open ended portion at the end of the class for further questions and discussion, and the class will mold itself to the needs of the folks taking it.

This course will take a dive into every aspect of sound. My goal is to have you, the eager new(or old!) disciple of sound, to walk away feeling like you have a basic grasp of how the things we hear come into being. The knowledge gained in this course will benefit everyone from artists to technicians to venue managers, even your grandma would learn something she can use. The class will be in three parts, the first being more of a lecture on the principles of sound, the second being a hands on to learn how we use and interact with equipment and our surroundings. The third is open ended, time to go over anything that confused you or to cover things that didn’t come up, whatever is helpful for the class! Bring your questions and your listening ears, that’s all you need!

7pm – FREE - 628 Metropolitan Ave

RSVP at bricktheater.com

A public, scripts-in-hand reading of a new play. It’s a q***r funny/serious/lyrical/erotic haunted house story.

Director: Devon Wade Granmo

Cast:
E. Jim Ford
Enrique Huili
Brian Lady
Fareeda Pasha

Javier and Matt have just moved into their dream house in Upstate New York to escape the city – and the baggage of their own shared past. Unbeknownst to both of them, though, they’re not alone in their new house. Their presence inspires a sexual awakening in the house’s resident spirit, and after 100+ years of being dead, he’s not exactly great at boundaries. Together with Javier’s amateur-psychic-best-friend Isis, everyone in the house, living and dead, are on a crash course with the ghosts of their past and on the other side of that, just maybe, a path forward.

Tessa just got out of a long relationship, Marcus is a serial dater, and The Waitress is an embodiment of toxic empowerment…or a projection of our own anxieties…or a shapeshifting demon. Part rom com, part fever dream, Date Play is an expressionistic adventure comedy that examines all the things we do instead of listening to each other.

Brick 2020

As of January 1, 2020 the new artistic team of the Brick has fully moved in: Theresa Buchheister has assumed the role of Artistic Director of The Brick. Theresa is joined by Associate Artistic Directors Ryan William Downey and Travis Just, along with a team of collaborators that includes Harrison Rivers, Nicolás Noreña, Justin Linville, Yuki Kawahisa, Teresa Braun, and Alyse Lamb.

They are honored to have the trust and support of co-founders Michael Gardner and Robert Honeywell and the Board of Directors, as they take the space in new directions, building on valuable time spent in downtown theatres, Brooklyn DIY venues, and weird basements.

This new team will usher The Brick into its third decade with a bold new vision and an abiding belief in the power of art. With a renewed focus on multi-week theatrical runs and a dynamic line-up of singular one-off events, The Brick will remain Williamsburg’s primary incubator of innovative theater and performing arts.
