Harmattan Theater is an environmental theater company based in New York City. Founded by May Joseph, Harmattan engages with water politics and climate anomalies. The company comprises an interconnected group of river activists, water theorists, eco artists, architects, peripatetic philosophers, environmental performers, street buskers and coastal communities around the world who have collaborated with May Joseph, to ask questions about the precarity of coastal societies, and the challenges facing seafaring communities across archipelagoes and island communities, globally. Inspired by the harmattan wind that traverses the Sahara from East Africa through West Africa, across the oceans to the Americas, Harmattan Theater interfaces the non human and the anthropocenic. It explores movement and potentialities between the body and the built environment. Water is a shared resource whose futurity demands a trans-oceanic awakening. Harmattan's projects are small gestures towards the shared future of rising oceans.
