A varied jazz-inspired score drives a gripping examination of race, class, perspective — & hope. "A Pint of Understanding” is a new musical about race and white privilege, different perspectives and the possibility of a sea change. Created by Joel LaRue Smith, composer, Joseph Smith,composer and Lee Phenner, lyricist/book writer. Collaborators: Benny Sato Ambush, director & story; and Scott Nicholas, music director. Set in 2012, the story is a work of fiction, but it was inspired by real people and events: When Sgt. Tim O’Connor, a white police officer, arrests a renowned African-American professor, Chester Washington III — and the U.S. president invites them to the White House for a beer—race, class, irony, and media spectacle combine to examine the unexamined and pose third rail questions. The professor’s cultural critic/filmmaker daughter, Chloe Washington, films their “Race in America” listening tour, and they soon become a radioactive trio on a quest that will radically change the course of their lives.
