Thanks to my friends Leia, , and Melinda,, I was able to attend the Book Award Gala to celebrate indie authors and publishers. So many amazing titles!

The PubWest Design Award winners were also profiled. So may complements for the cookbook!

Such a great night. I met so many amazing and talented creators these past few days and still have one more day to go!

January brought the first trip of 2026 and the first big snow at our new home in Pittsburgh.

1. Soft launched , our new beginner theme for food bloggers.
2. First early flight of the year to Los Angeles. My first time there. Can’t wait to go back!
3. Attended for the 2nd time. Great programming this year!
4. Met our developer and Blog Pantry partner, Christina (), for the first time IRL! 🎉
5. Star struck to meet Liz Marek winner of Cake Wars. Chad and I loved the show!
6. Always love being in the company of the amazing Sandie Markle, .
7. Loved seeing fellow Yinzer Sabrina, and learning about Google Analytics. 🤓
8. Visited Now Serving LA - a teeny bookstore only for cookbooks! 😍 I bought a cool LA zine. I’ll share more about that later.
9. I spied ‘s cookbook on the shelf. Check out our episode with him on our podcast Creatively Spesking with WSD.
10. Through 15. Got to hang out one of my cool college dorm mates, from The Last Bookstore, to the museum, seeing the sun set, and a fun night out near the Santa Monica Pier. Enjoyed every minute.
16. The airport was hoping the Steelers would pull out a W but sadly…did not.
17. Worked on some cool project samples.
18. Celebrated my parent’s 55th anniversary. 💕
19. And celebrated Nate’s 19th birthday. 🎂
20. Enjoyed the quiet and peaceful snowfall. First big storm of the year…cozy in our new home.

Mike Hulquist was already a published author when he came to Weller⁠ Smith Design. But the face behind Chili Pepper Madness wanted more⁠ control over the content, presentation, and approach than he did when⁠ someone else was the publisher. He also wanted his cookbook to be a little⁠ different—fun, bold, and full of flavor, just like the recipes he creates for⁠ Chili Pepper Madness, the website he’s run for 25 years to inspire others to⁠ find their inner “chilihead.”⁠
