Hotel New Work provides collaboratively-driven companies in the midst of creating ambitious new work with 40 hours of rehearsal time and one work-in-progress showing with feedback.

Theaterlab is happy to provide room keys to Arturo Luíz Soria, Danilio Gambini, Nahuel Telleria, José Espinosa, Kathy Ruvuna, Johnny Moreno , Krista Smith, Stephanie Osin Cohen, as they develop The White Whale Journal

After the tragic death of his brother, a writer inherits a strange archive: journals of daily life, each tagged with a sticker—pig, plum blossom, small talismans of attention. All are accounted for save one: The White Whale Journal. Drawn into the undertow of his brother’s words, the performer goes hunting—for what was withheld, erased, or too heavy to name. He builds a ritual from fragments and margins, chasing the meaning of blank pages and deliberate gaps.

The play refuses quiet reverence, circling instead the cultural silence around su***de and the lack of rituals to hold it. In tracking what’s missing, the narrator resists a neat ending, choosing obsession over closure, pursuit over resignation. What emerges is not an answer, but a widening: a brother restored not as a final act, but as a vast, unfinished human story still breaching the surface.

The Hotel New Work Residency will conclude with a work-in-progress showing which will allow the artist to present up to 45 minutes of what they have been working on during the residency.

Testing the boundaries of solo performance and new artistic territory, early, never-before-seen experimental work finds a home in front of an audiences for the first time,

THE GALLERY SERIES champions the unique potential of the individual performer and challenges artists to craft ambitious explorations of the specific and intimate relationship between solo performers and spectators.

Artists with highly experimental, combustible, pliable works receive up to 25 hours of rehearsal and two nights of performances in our intimate Gallery, for audiences of no more than 20 people as a catalyst for future development

Theaterlab invites you to join Jeremy Rafal as he develops his never before seen work, SCHUBERT WAS A RICE QUEEN.

Vienna, 1828. Composer Franz Schubert is dying, but not without throwing one last party. Re-introducing himself as an Aquarius, tea-spiller, and musical genius, he recollects the life of an artist in post-Napoleonic Vienna under Metternich, where anything erotic, foreign, or new is treated as a political threat.

Souvenirs from the Orient become portals to imagined q***r histories through piano performance, puppetry, and scandalous reminiscence, recasting Schubert as history’s unwritten rice queen.

Schubert Was a Rice Queen is an immersive solo show that blends cabaret, puppet fantasia, and live recital, featuring some of Schubert’s most beloved works, from his piano sonatas and impromptus to Lieder such as Erlkönig and Ständchen.

SUPPORT HOTEL NEW WORK : GET A ROOM KEY

Hotel New Work provides collectives and companoes in the midst of creating challenging new work with 40 hours of rehearsal, a work-in-progress showing, and $750 cash support.
