Eighty-eight years ago today, my grandfather was born.

Last year on his birthday, I started this account as a place to put words to a grief I was learning to live with.

A year later, so much has changed. The grief that brought me here has both deepened and softened. My family has walked through two more losses since then, and I’ve learned that love and grief have always lived together, they simply just change shape over time.

This poem was written for my grandfather and is included in what has since become my book, Love Letters to Grief.

Looking back over this past year, I’m grateful for every person who has read, shared, or trusted me with their own story of loss. What began with one man’s life and legacy has connected me with people carrying their own love, their own grief, and their own memories.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to the one who is still looking out for me. 🤍
