It’s our great honor to introduce the first NYSWA founding president

Marguerite Thompson Zorach (1887-1968)

Growing up in Fresno, California, Zorach began drawing at a very young age. In 1908, at age 21, she left Stanford University for Paris and attended the post-impressionist school, Academie de La Palette. There she met her future husband, William Zorach, an American sculptor and painter.

Paris, capital of the arts, awakened her artistic sensibility to a a new non-traditional approach to painting. She was drawn to the vibrant colors and painterly techniques of the Fauvist painters and also to the spatial structure of the Cubists. In Paris her talent was recognized. Zorach’s work was included in the 1910 and 1911 annual exhibitions—just two years after her arrival there.

Moving to New York City in 1912, Marguerite and William Zorach married. The following year both she and her husband participated in the 1913 Armory Show. By all accounts, in 1916, Zorach was considered “the best known woman artist of her generation in America.”

Maguerite’s work was multi-faceted, she was a painter, illustrator, print-maker and textile artist. She supported her husband and children for many years through her textile work which was collected by many prominent Americans. She also did work for the WPA during the Depression, including two murals. Her work was heavily influenced by the fauvist color experiments and modernist emphasis on surface shape and pattern, especially as it referred to folk art and decorative pattern.
Marguerite got involved in arts organizations; serving as an officer of the Society of Independent Artists, and as well as the first president of the New York Society of Women Artists. She was an early board member of the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset and taught at and served on the board of governors of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She lived a long and artistically productive life, until her death at the age of 81, in 1968.

American Flag Wreath, 2022
Mardi Gras Beads, Welded Steel Bolt Wire, Melted Aluminum

Every year during the holiday season I am fascinated by beads used for Mardi Gras, which are mysterious and beautiful. In 2022, this wreath was created by wrapping a large quantity of these beads and combining them with steel and melted aluminum. To the beads’ traditional colors of purple, green and
gold, I added the colors associated with the American flag: red, blue, white and silver. It becomes a celebratory wreath for many occasions, not just the holidays.
As Lori Horowitz, Lori Horowitz President of New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA), described it: “This carefully curated exhibition offers deep insight into the challenges we face – current issues that affect our world. Our mission as artists is to relate these views and reach our audience and communities to spark understanding and awareness. Together, this collaboration exemplifies the enduring capacity of art to confront complexity, inspire dialogue, and envision progress.”

Yellow Cross (Small)
Oil and Acrylic on Canvas

This is a small version of several Yellow Cross paintings I made over several years. The cross is associated with death and resurrection. Bright yellow and dark blue make an exciting statement on canvas, asserting that death is not the end but the beginning.

Tools of the Trade, 2012
Polymer Clay

“Tools of the Trade” brings together a bird, a hand, a saw, a tree stump and a string of pearls to explore the complex relationship between legacy and transformation. The hand, saw and tree suggest human intervention and the interruption of natural cycles, referencing labor, control and loss. In contrast, the string of pearls introduces themes of inherited beauty, value and fragility, raising questions about what is preserved and what is sacrificed. The bird, as a symbol of freedom and transience, offers a counterpoint to the grounded and altered forms below. Together, these elements form a reflection on how we shape the world and what remains in the aftermath of that shaping.
Sensei Linda Armstrong, KSI Women’s Kumite, Cape Town,
South Africa, 2008
Acrylic on Canvas

My painting of two women sparring during an international karate competition celebrates both the artistry and discipline of Kimura Shukokai Karate. It speaks to the skill, self-discipline and endurance that competition demands while also marking a cultural shift: the recognition of women in spaces once reserved solely for men. By placing these athletes at the center, the work reflects on how far women have advanced in gaining acceptance and respect in the past century and honors their determination not only as participants but as equals.
As Lori Horowitz, Lori Horowitz President of New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA), described it: “This carefully curated exhibition offers deep insight into the challenges we face – current issues that affect our world. Jazz Combo, Central Park, NYC

Depictions of New York City’s imposing park show people engaged in recreational activities and often include familiar landmarks. Rogge views Central Park as a vast playground where people coexist with nature, and her exquisitely painted scenes express her depth of knowledge about and love for the park.

Oil on Canvas
I paint nature. The world around me is fascinating and I love capturing its spirit. The light, tones, colors, shapes and forms are always changing and moving, and I never tire of putting to canvas the feelings that I experience as I immerse myself in this fascinating world. I am blessed to be able to connect with the spirit of nature.
