100 years ago this month, the UGC, together with many of the region's glee clubs, joined together in a mass ensemble of over 800 voices to create the "Associated Glee Clubs of America" which gave its first concert at the old Metropolitan Opera House on March 31, 1925. Each piece performed was conducted by one the many conductors involved in the enterprise, including our own "Dear Old Conductor", Arthur Woodruff, who conducted the "Hunting Song" from Reginald De Koven's 1891 comic opera "Robin Hood". The concert was broadcast live over radio on WEAF, New York, and the recording was subsequently released on vinyl by Columbia Records, its first album ever to be electronically recorded.

The initiator of the project was conductor and composer Walter Damrosch (1862-1950), director of the New York Symphony Orchestra, and a pioneer in both mass choral conducting and classical music radio broadcasting. Participating choruses included the Apollo Club of Brooklyn, Banks Glee Club of New York, Friendly Sons Glee Club of New York, Glee Club of Nutley, Glee Club of the Oranges, Hartford Choral Society, Mendelssohn Glee Club of New York, Men's Glee Club of Mt. Vernon, Montclair Glee Club, Orpheus Club of Newark, Orpheus Club of Flushing, Singers' Club of New York, Summit Glee Club, University Glee Club of Brooklyn, and the UGC of NYC. (Arthur Woodruff was the conductor of several of these groups!)

At the link below you can hear the Associated Glee Club's rendering of our beloved "John Peel", performed at the debut 1925 concert and conducted by the arranger, Mark Andrews.
