What does it mean to build a practice rooted in history, embodiment, and the future?

For Daniel Alexander Jones, it means working at the crossroads of performance, music, and literature to create what he calls the "ancientfuture." In his words: "I tend my roots and my cultures as living ecosystems... and I work from their archives (their stories, their songs, their lessons, and their maps) as much as anything."

At this summer’s La MaMa Umbria International Symposium for Directors / Theatre-Makers, Daniel will lead a workshop called "playing ancient futures." He describes it as "an invitation to practice rooted in layers of history, embodiment, and speculation." Participants will write, move, and assemble through daily group experiences and individualized assignments, culminating in a processional sharing.

This is for directors and theatre-makers ready to deepen their artistic practice through focused contemplation and creative exercises in dialogue with personal pasts, the land, and imagined futures.

As playwright Sarah Ruhl says: "Daniel Alexander Jones is a poet of mighty theatrical proportions. Seeing his plays is like getting baptized. ... Daniel is a transmitter of light."

For Pride Month, we continue our "La MaMa Conversations" with Nicky Paraiso and Erick Alonso.

In this excerpt, Nicky shares a story about his first boyfriend – a young man who died of AIDS. It is a story of love, loss, and the long shadow of the early epidemic. But also a story of resilience, of carrying that memory forward, and of being proud of who you are and who you have loved.

Nicky is an actor, musician, curator, Obie Award winner, and a pillar of downtown NYC's q***r theater community.

⚡️ 5:00 PM | CUL-DE-SAC by Leslie Gauthier

What happens to the people who live on land where there was once a massacre? In Cul-de-Sac, three women’s lives unfold and intertwine as they’re haunted by the same ghosts. Based on a real-life traffic circle in Mystic, CT, the men responsible for a violent past shape the relationships of the women they haunt – until they’re exorcised by time, nature, and the resurrection of lost language. The play spans across centuries to expose unmet desires, wasted talent, and missed connections—but also to expose what endures.

⚡️ 7:30 PM | HOUSE GYALZ by Abigail C. Onwunali

House Gyalz is a fierce, darkly comedic thriller set inside the lavish home of a Nigerian socialite whose world begins to unravel overnight. As two housemaids spiral deeper into dangerous roleplay, buried desires and impossible loyalties erupt into chaos. Blending razor-sharp satire with explosive theatricality, House Gyalz reimagines Jean Genet’s classic through a contemporary Nigerian lens, examining class, power, womanhood, and what it costs to finally break free.

━━━━━━━━━

The Experiments play reading series has provided a forum for talented playwrights and theatre makers to continue their creative process. The Monday night readings give emerging artists the opportunity to hear their developing works read by professional actors and receive valuable audience feedback.

Derek Goldman, shares their experience at La MaMa Umbria. 🇮🇹✨

Every summer, theatre-makers from around the world gather in a restored 700-year-old convent in the Umbrian hills. Not just to learn—but to connect, to experiment, and to find new ways of seeing their own work.

La MaMa Umbria's International Symposium for Directors / Theatre-Makers is a hands-on, immersive training program led by internationally renowned artists. This summer features two 10-day sessions (August 12–21 and August 23–September 1), plus a dedicated Playwright Retreat (September 3–13). Participants take daily workshops, visit cultural sites like Perugia and Assisi, and share their own processes with a global cohort of peers.

It's where lifelong friendships are formed, where voices are discovered, and where the spirit of Ellen Stewart lives on.
