In 1896, Alfred Jarry’s seminal play Ubu Roi was performed twice at a cafe in Paris. 130 years later, an experimental revival of the play was staged at Theatre Row as part of Fall of Freedom's national Mayday movement. Written by a diverse group of 28 writers using the Surrealist game of "Exquisite Co**se," the script brings Ubu Roi into the present day, reflecting the concerns of not just a single writer, but of many. It was such an honor to partner with Fall of Freedom on this one-night-only event. Congrats to all on a truly successful experiment!

Join us this Friday, May 1st to take part in Fall of Freedom, a nationwide artist protest.

Events will be happening on Mayday across the country. Here's what you can see at Theatre Row at 7pm:

Theatre One- A screening of Damned in the USA, a documentary about censorship and a discussion of the lawsuit and trial that followed to block the film’s 1991 release. Presented in partnership with The Martin Garbus ’59 First Amendment Fellowship at New York University Law School.

Theatre Two- A staged reading of An Exquisite Co**se of Ubu Roi, an experimental re-imagining of the seminal 1896 play Ubu Roi, revised by a diverse group of 28 writers. This reading is currently sold out, but visit theatrerow.org for info on how to join the waiting list!

Both events are Theatre Row Community Partnerships.

After a wonderful run of performances of their new play, Gorgone, we were so touched to receive this sweet message from ’s talented Youth Company. Thank YOU to the students and the whole Opening Act team for an incredible weekend.

The Opening Act Youth Company brings together high school students from across New York City to create bold, original theater about the social justice issues that matter most to them. These students collaborate with professional theater artists to devise and perform an original play, building creative, leadership, and teamwork skills along the way. The program culminates in a public performance at a professional NYC theater — giving young people the chance to see their stories come to life on stage. Give them a follow for more info!
