Together with Ma Dukes, J Dilla’s mother, and Save The Music teacher Mr. Mandeep Sethi, the June Jordan School for Equity in San Francisco unveiled a new mural by Eli Lippert in October. The beautiful mural honors J Dilla, legendary hip-hop producer, and creative musical genius. We celebrate Dilla’s legacy through classrooms everywhere, breaking cultural and societal barriers through beats. Those who have been integral to the J. Dilla Music Tech Program, we thank you. Without your support, we could not continue the push for the equitable resources necessary to inspire inner talent, confidence, and Dilla’s vision in students.

“I have one student who has a particularly difficult home life and says that when she comes to music class, she forgets about her problems. I have seen so much social-emotional healing occurring. She used to be secluded and never interacted with others or participated in class. Now she is a true leader and has developed her music skills. Music has the power to connect, heal and transform.” -Save The Music Teacher at Richland Elementary School in San Marcos, CA

Most children miss the early introduction to music education and its benefits. Taking a step toward school readiness requires the motor skills, language, and literacy development found in a music curriculum. Granting schools the ability to introduce this can make all the difference for students and their future. Instruments and musical language educate both the body and mind!

Music resonates through our bodies and mind in a way that nothing else can, and research has found that it is a holistic treatment for mental health.

Access to this medium at school is imperative because its healing effects help students through the stressors of their most crucial and formative years. Music learning brings peace to their state of mind and provides an exciting structure for students to navigate their day-to-day.

Music creates a common ground to learn using its universal language. Without it, students miss their chance to connect with and nurture the culture of their community. By investing in music education, we are connecting students in these communities to a very rich musical and cultural legacy that is rightfully theirs.
