🦌 "no one was dancing, but I saw the choreography in my head. I saw the whole ballet...because the writing was so rich..."

In a recent conversation, dancer, choreographer, and life coach Aubrey Lynch II reflected on the first staged reading of Deer Blind with our Business Manager Lane McLeod Jackson. No movement had been choreographed yet—but the language, the tension, and the stillness hinted at something aching to move.
Now, movement arrives.

🔥🎭 STAFF PICKS: TYLER RILEY 🎭🔥

Our Artistic Director and resident vibe curator is next up in our Staff Picks series, and let’s just say: the man’s taste? Immaculate.

We’re talking…
💘 Romantic chaos from Shakespeare (“I do love nothing in the world so well as you—is not that strange?”)
🎹 August Wilson wisdom that hits like a sermon (“Ain’t no mystery to life. You just got to go out and meet it square on.”)
✊🏾 A reminder of joy + strength from Ossie Davis (“I find, in being Black, a thing of beauty…”)
🌟 Musicals that range from cult classics to heart-breakers (Fela!, Passing Strange, A Strange Loop, Sweeney Todd, The Band’s Visit)
📚 Plays that demand attention (The Piano Lesson, For Colored Girls, The Ferryman, Is God Is, Blithe Spirit)
👏 Performances burned into memory (Nicole Ari Parker, Chita Rivera, Corey Hawkins, Cicely Tyson, Kara Young in literally anything).

Tyler joined Company of Fools to chase the work that shakes audiences awake, and his picks are exactly that: daring, electric, unforgettable.

💬 Now it’s your turn: what’s ONE show, musical, or performance you’ll never shut up about? Drop it below ⬇️

📚✨ It’s Library Card Sign-Up Month and we’re here to remind you: the best drama isn’t always onstage, sometimes it’s on the shelves.

Our team pulled our fave plays you can snag at your local library (yes, libraries have theatre scripts, and yes, it feels like unlocking cheat codes for the stage). From Shakespeare to Suzan-Lori Parks, Mischief Theatre to McDonagh, it’s all waiting for you.

Because your library card isn’t just plastic.
It’s an all-access pass to centuries of:
🎭 Drama
😂 Comedy
💥 Chaos

So sign up. Check out. Dive in.
And let’s keep making noise for both live theatre and local libraries.

⚖️✨ THROWBACK TO MEASURE FOR MEASURE (2019) ✨⚖️

A Duke ghosting his own city.
A deputy with a God complex.
A woman told to stay quiet, who refuses.

Back in 2019, we cracked open Shakespeare’s so-called “problem play” with Barefoot Shakespeare Company and dove headfirst into Vienna’s moral panic. Puritan laws. Fornication scandals. A society obsessed with control but terrified of desire.

We asked one messy, dangerous question:
👉 What happens to a society when women’s voices are silenced? 👈

Alchemical Studios became our playground of power, hypocrisy, and truth-telling. Isabella said it best:
“...for truth is truth / To the end of reckoning.”

🦌💔🔫 A marriage on the rocks. A rifle that won’t fire. And three deer who just wanna DANCE IT OUT.

This fall, Company of Fools is cracking open DEER BLIND by Collin Blackard, a dark comedy where hunting season collides with mating season, and the humans aren’t the only ones in trouble.

Picture this: two men hiding out in a hunting blind, confessing secrets that should probably stay buried. Meanwhile, Tab’s wife is prepping for a mysterious guest who may or may not blow everything up. And through it all? A trio of whitetail deer wander through like woodland Beyoncé back-up dancers, serving antler realness and embodying the ecstasy (and agony) of mating season.

It’s messy. It’s absurd. It’s hilarious. It’s heartbreak in camouflage.

👉 This reading is INVITE ONLY (for now 👀), but don’t worry, the deer are talking, and the woods have ears. Stick around, because the blind is reopening soon and you’ll want to be there when it does.

Dare to fail gloriously with us. Dare to dance with deer. Dare to peek inside the blind. 🦌✨

✨🎭 STAFF PICKS: CAMERON CUEVA CLARKE 🎭✨

Our co-founder and Literary Director is kicking off our brand-new Staff Picks series, and honestly? He came in swinging.

We’re talking…
📜 Quotes that live in your brain rent-free (“They’re not going to kill my stories”… chills)
🎶 Musicals that wreck you in the best way (Hadestown, Fun Home, The Last Five Years)
📚 Plays that punch you in the gut (The Pillowman, Sweat, Topdog/Underdog, True West)
🌟 Performances you wish you could’ve seen in person (Philip Seymour Hoffman in Death of a Salesman, Nathan Lane in Angels in America, Ruth Negga in Hamlet)
🔥 And the real reason he built Company of Fools: guerrilla theatre, big risks, zero fear of failure.

This list is basically a crash course in what makes Cameron tick and proof that his theatre taste is a little dangerous, a little poetic, and a lot iconic.

💬 Your turn: Drop your all-time favorite theatre line in the comments. Bonus points if it’s messy. Extra bonus points if it’s Shakespeare.

🤠🔥 THROWBACK TO TRUE WEST (2017) 🔥🤠

Two brothers. One film script. Zero chill.

Back in March 2017, we dove headfirst into Sam Shepard’s True West, a Pulitzer finalist where sibling rivalry meets the California desert and the stakes are as high as the toast count. Austin’s got the “serious” love story, Lee’s got the “trashy” Western, and a producer caught in the middle just wants a hit.

Directed by Cameron Clarke and staged at The Sonnet in the Producers Club, this one had stolen typewriters, tense standoffs, and enough burnt bread to smoke out the whole neighborhood.

🃏 Just because we’re not onstage doesn’t mean we’re not working.

Company of Fools is deep in our plotting era, dreaming up new stories, forging chaotic partnerships, and scheming ways to make the theater world a little braver, queerer, and more delightfully unhinged. 💭🔥

But here’s the truth: even when the stage is dark, the hustle doesn’t stop. The rent’s still due, the inbox is still overflowing, and the coffee budget? Critically low. ☕📝💡

If you believe in theater that bites back—bold, messy, radically human—this is your moment. Support now means more stories later. And more fools, always.
