We are currently closed and will resume gallery operations with a new exhibition opening September 26, 2026.

Our facade remains on view with an artwork by Denilson Baniwa. Across Manhattan and Brooklyn, signs from Alex Strada’s “Public Address” are posted on city infrastructure, with a central installation in Columbus Park, Brooklyn.

Today is the final chance to visit 归舟: Longings, Returns by Sim Chi Yin. Alongside the exhibition, Sim presented two nights of performance. She brought us into her fifteen-year-long research into her grandfather’s deportation and execution—a story that is shared by tens of thousands of others who were a part of the mass deportations in Malaya. Through this performance-installation, Sim both uncovers and rearranges archival histories, and reaches towards forms of return.

This is the final week to visit Sim Chi Yin’s “归舟: Longings, Returns,” on view through this Saturday, August 29.

Sim’s three-channel video installation embeds two goddesses in the triangular end of the gallery: Mazu, the protector of seafarers, and Guanyin, who represents mercy and compassion. These two Chinese folk figures look in and across the space, towards the wider end, where two other video channels play. A small effigy boat anchors the center of the installation. Modeled after vessels used in Chinese folk ritual practice—the piece has been modified to resemble the steamship “Van Riemsdyk” which Sim’s grandfather was deported on—for a symbolic final passage to the next world/life.

“I wish they understood what was, is no longer working. What is, hasn’t been born yet.”

Alexandra Delano’s reading is part of Alex Strada’s “Public Address” which included an intimate public program that brought artists and community members together to reflect on homelessness, migration, the arts and civic life in and beyond the city.

Expanding on the themes of Strada’s exhibition, this conversation emphasized how art creates space for critical dialogue.

DAAR—Decolonizing Architecture Art Research, an architecture/art practice convened by Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti, is the inaugural recipient of the Kyong Park Prize for Art and Architecture.

Honoring the legacy of Storefront’s founder Kyong Park, the prize recognizes critical practices at the intersection of art, architecture, and politics, providing an unrestricted award of 25,000 USD. This award emerges from multiple stages of evaluation by a distinguished interdisciplinary jury composed of Negar Azimi, Thomas Keenan, Manuela Moscoso, Marina Otero Verzier, Eugenie Tsai, and Mabel O. Wilson.

A public ceremony celebrating the inaugural Kyong Park Prize will be held this Friday, June 26 at 7 pm as part of the Annual Gathering hosted by the Entity of Decolonization in Entity of Decolonization, Borgo Ex (Rizza), Sicily. This includes a lecture by Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti, introductions by José Esparza Chong Cuy and Marina Otero Verzier, and a conversation with DAAR and Kyong Park moderated by Manuela Moscoso and Guillermo Ruiz de Teresa.

Join us tomorrow, April 28 from 6:30–8 pm for a Listening Session. Inside the new exhibition “Black Fire!,” we will explore sonic archives and radical alternate imaginaries through vinyl, audio recordings, and soundscapes. Each host brings distinct practices rooted in sound, memory, and speculative world-making. Part conversation, part back-to-back set, the session invites audiences into an intimate encounter with the otherworldly frequencies embedded in archival and experimental sound.

We are joined by scholar of African Self-Liberation Mhoze Chikowero, Grammy-nominated creator and writer, Shana L. Redmond, scholar of African American and Africana Studies, Zoé Samudzi, and Thandi Loewenson, whose exhibition creates space for the session.

“Black Fire!” by Thandi Loewenson is now open and on view through June 27!

Tomorrow, Children ages 4–12—and their guests—are invited to a Spooky Action Workshop at the gallery from 2–4 pm. Artist and educator Niceli Portugal () will guide this program, where participants will use scrap materials and simple assembly techniques to create their own shadow puppets and bring them to life through a light projection. After the workshop, participants will build short shadow performances exploring the boundaries between fiction and collective narratives.

Opening this Wednesday from 6–8 pm with a performance by , “Black Fire!” presents a critical yet atmospheric examination of UFO archives tied to Zimbabwe, reflecting on what these uncanny stories of extraterrestrial encounters reveal about notions of race and the alien.
