Today's spotlight shines on Tamrin Goldberg, a spectacular swing in our North American Touring Company. Read on as she outlines her journey to Broadway, her passion for dance, and what it means to navigate this industry as a woman.

"Growing up in the ballet world, I spent countless hours/weeks/years attempting to fit a mold that just wasn't quite built for me. My classmates and I pushed ourselves single-mindedly towards one clear aesthetic: the highest legs, the best turnout, the smallest waistline, the thinnest thighs. At the same time, I saw how a boy in my class was taught to develop the elements of himself that stood out, to lean in to the qualities that made him unique. As the only boy, he'd be front and center regardless, so he had better find what made him special, even if he didn't fit *the mold.* I completely missed the fact that I wasn't getting this same encouragement. In subsequent years, my own dance world opened up, and I learned to love and develop my own unique artistry, but I still had this unachievable *aesthetic gold standard* in the back of my mind. I would skip auditions because I couldn't find leggings that flattered me in a way that made me feel like I deserved to be in the room.

Just out of college, during a dance program in Paris, I met legendary Ailey dancer and choreographer, Hope Boykin. I shared these feelings with her, and she said to me: "In a world full of apples, be the best orange you can be." It occurred to me that essentially this is what my male classmate had been encouraged to do from the start, and it's been my personal journey ever since. Something I love most about this cast of Moulin Rouge! The Musical is that I'm not in a world of apples here. We've got an entire fruit salad! Maybe that's taking the metaphor a little too far, but in all seriousness, this cast (this entire team) is full of women who own their power, who own their uniquely magical ways of being in the world and on the stage. This captivating group of artists have had wildly different journeys, but we're all here at The Rouge together. I hope that through our individuality we're able to inspire our audiences to find extra bits of beauty, freedom, truth, and love in and for themselves." - Tamrin Goldberg

Tony Award WINNER Katie Kresek, ladies and gentlemen 🎻

Do you have a specific memory that caused you to pursue a career in music?
"I come from a family of musicians and it was really important to them that I study music. In high school, I remember thinking that of all the activities I pursued, music was the most interesting and satisfying to me. It was something creative that I understood that gave me my own space. Art is such an important part of an education and I'm very grateful that I had the opportunity to have so much music through the public schools. I can't imagine where I'd be if I hadn't."

Tell us about that Tony Award!
"Winning the Tony was both a huge surprise and a huge thrill! Even more exciting was learning that I was the first American woman and second woman overall to win in the category. I hope that can be part of sending a signal to more people that doors need to be opened for women on creative teams as they were for me."

What do you think is the biggest challenge for women in the music industry?
"Women are often held to a tremendous double standard, and not only in leadership roles. We're expected to be extremely agreeable and not make waves in male-dominated spaces, or suffer the reputation of being difficult. I think carrying that pressure not only influences our attitudes and self-perceptions, but more importantly the choices we're forced to make while working. I've encountered such a variety of male micro aggressions over the years in so many circumstances that now I don't judge myself too harshly for not being able to respond to them in ideal ways in the moment because I know it won't be long before the next time. I try to reflect on these when they happen and clarify how to recognize and handle them in the future, and that in itself is a lot of mental labor."

Do you have any advice for young women hoping to play in a Broadway pit one day?
"I'd say surround yourself with people you love to work with, and cultivate patience, confidence, independence, and resilience. Also, make sure to take the time to invest in yourself: your own creativity, your own curiosities. It's important to keep yourself healthy and happy so you can bring good energy to whatever you're doing."

Bohemians and Artists, we give you Moulin Rouge! The Musical's Head Electrician, Michele Gutierrez.

"On my father’s side, stagehands go back 4 generations (including me). Some of my earliest memories are of live theater. My father would take us to see whatever he was working on. This meant Russian opera in Central Park, the 1812 overture, and Swan Lake. We went behind the scenes at Sesame Street, game shows, and (here, I am dating myself) Dark Shadows. Being in front of the curtain and then peering behind was an incredible magical experience. The sights, the sounds, the smells.

I have worked on many places and in different departments. Props on soap operas and ballet, carpentry on Broadway and Lincoln Center. I ultimately landed in electrics because it was the path most open for women and because I saw it as the most involved in the production. I never wanted to sing or dance or act. But I do enjoy being a creative part of the performance by running a spotlight or working in sound.

The most significant challenge for women in the business has changed since I started. Then it was as simple as being a woman. Everyone sizes you up unconsciously and less now, I think. I think women spend an inordinate amount of effort proving that they just belong here. But the biggest challenge for women is understanding your “shelf life”. Careers in theater are notoriously short. In order to stay in the business you need to be realistic in your evaluation of your abilities as well as your commitment to the grueling hours. You also need to keep educating yourself. For everyone, but especially people who want to have families, there is a point where the decision about home and family life has to be made. There are many compromises and creative choices to make.

To everyone looking to work on a big or any production: you don’t have to be on Broadway to make a difference in theatre. Do your best in anything you do. Look around and understand what other people do. Keep learning. There are so many free resources out there. Many people are offering classes online. Many professionals will answer questions. Don’t ever be afraid to ask, or to admit you don’t know something." - Michele Gutierrez
