Please save the date for the opening reception of Tang Shuo’s solo exhibition, “Borrowed History,” at PLATO’s lower gallery on Thursday, October 8, from 6–8 PM.

Tang Shuo explores themes of identity, nature, and human connection. Shuo spent his early years growing up in a small village in southern China. Drawing on memories of his upbringing and his family’s history, he conjures mysterious scenes that evoke universal myths, in which he often appears as the protagonist. Shuo’s compositions, steeped in art-historical references, contemplate personal memory, relocation, and migration within broader cultural histories.

Tang Shuo (b. 1987) received his Bachelor’s degree at the Department of Mural Painting of Guangxi Arts University (2008-2012) and studied Experimental Art at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing (2014-2015). His recent solo exhibitions include Borrowed History at PLATO, New York (2026), upcoming; My Garden at Steve Turner, LA (2024); The Narrators at Beers London (2024); and Shadow of Boulder Hill at Fabienne Levy Gallery, Lausanne and Geneva (2023).

Please save the date for the opening reception of Shuto Okayasu’s second solo exhibition at PLATO, “Impermanence/無常,” on Thursday, October 8, from 6–8 PM.

Inspired by Japanese painting, visual culture, and poetry, as well as by cross-cultural exchanges between Japanese and Western artists, Okayasu created a series of works dedicated to the fleeting nature of life and the appreciation of its cyclical nature: the experience of parenthood, when the passage of time is clearly manifested through the child’s growth; endearing moments with beloved pets; seasons habitually changing the face of the city; a musical performance meant to be repeated yet never the same when done live.

In “Impermanence/無常,” Okayasu revisits his favorite themes—New York City living, dream space, and shared moments of suspended time—through the lens of a wiser, more experienced self, embracing change and cherishing every passing moment.

“Suspended Trace (Chaine bleue II)” (2026)
oil on linen
40 x 30 in.

“Suspended Trace (Chaine bleue II)” captures the movement of material and registers the traces of action rather than just depicting the objects. It registers the motion blur of the chains, transforming an otherwise hard and heavy object into something as soft as the curtains surrounding them.

This work is currently on display at PLATO until October 3 as a part of Maude Corriveau’s solo exhibition, “Between Folds.”

Maude Corriveau (b. 1986) is a Canadian artist based in Montreal. She obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Visual and Media Arts from the University of Quebec in Montreal. Corriveau’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the Montreal Museum
of Fine Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art of Laurentides, Saint-Jérôme, Museum of Fine Arts in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, PLATO, Galerie Nicolas Robert, Galerie Cache Studio, Orama, and many others.

Ákos Ezer’s solo exhibition, “Call of the Wild” is open through October 3. We will be open late this Friday, September 25, for Downtown Gallery Night, which will be an extra opportunity to see the show alongside those of our neighbors!

Ezer sees his figures venturing into nature as participants in the Plato’s Allegory of the Cave: leaving briefly to see true reality, only to hurry back to watch the shadows inside.

Despite the challenges that good old-fashioned relaxation in nature and offline living present to modern digital natives, the figures are painted with obvious pleasure and deliberate precision. Vibrant colors and luscious brushstrokes highlight the painter’s inherent optimism. Naming Willem de Kooning, Georg Baselitz, and Henri Rousseau among his references, Ezer also cites more vernacular and contemporary sources of inspiration, such as comic books, animation, 3D graphics, and the digital world.

The result is a body of work that moves fluidly between art history and modernity, irony and sincerity. In “Call of the Wild, “ nature becomes not an escape from the modern world, but another place in which to encounter it.

“Fingerwalk” (2026)
oil on canvas
39 2/5 x 47 1/5 in. / 100 x 120 cm

Ákos Ezer’s stylized figures with elongated limbs navigate their settings with charming awkwardness and subtle humor. Functioning as a mirror-like refuge, Ezer’s paintings welcome viewers to reflect on their own relationship with modern technology and the universal search for peace within.

Ezer’s solo exhibition at PLATO is on view through October 3.

Maude Corriveau’s second solo exhibition at PLATO, “Between Folds,” is on view through October 3.

“Between Folds” explores the unstable threshold where images emerge through the encounter of gravity, light, and material. Rather than presenting textiles as static objects, these paintings investigate the conditions through which an image appears, hesitates, and comes into focus. They occupy the space between physical matter and optical fiction, where perception remains suspended in continual negotiation.

The curtain functions as the exhibition’s central device. Historically associated with concealment and illusion, it is approached here less as a symbolic motif than as an optical and phenomenological system. Its folds are not composed but produced through physical forces—tension, weight, handling, and time. They register the traces of action rather than simply describing an object.

This body of work draws on the writing on fallen drapery by the French philosopher and art historian Georges Didi-Huberman, according to which the fold survives the body that once animated it. Here, the textile no longer stands in for the figure but acquires its own autonomy. The fold persists after gesture has disappeared, preserving the memory of an action while remaining open to new perceptual possibilities.

“Mirror” (2026)
oil on canvas
51 1/5 x 31 1/2 in. / 130 x 80 cm

“Mirror” is currently on view at Plato through October 3 as part of Ákos Ezer’s solo exhibition, “Call of the Wild.”

“Call of the Wild” presents a new body of work by the Hungarian artist in which his signature dreamy youths, with their elongated limbs and expressive forms, venture into nature in search of solace. They roast marshmallows, knit scarves while whistling to the wind, drink mint tea, collect pebbles, pick apples, and blow soap bubbles. Their activities are deliberately ordinary—small acts of pleasure
that recall the slower rhythms of childhood and offer an imagined respite from the accelerated, screen-saturated reality of contemporary life.

Yet a retreat into nature may be less attainable than it seems. Are we still capable of having an unmediated experience, or is the urge to reach for our phones—to seek a dose of dopamine, capture an image, or immediately share it on social media—unavoidable?

Please just us for the opening reception of Ákos Ezer’s solo exhibition, “Call of the Wild,” at our lower gallery next Thursday, September 3, from 6:00–8:00 PM.

“Call of the Wild” will present a new body of work by the Hungarian artist. His signature dreamy youths with elongated limbs will return to New York, this time setting an example of how to attempt to find solace and escape in nature, solo or with a group of friends: whistling to the wind while knitting a scarf for the upcoming winter, starting a fire with a single match, roasting marshmallows, drinking refreshing mint tea, collecting pebbles on the beach, picking up apples, or blowing soap bubbles. Fit for both adults and children, these unproductive but pleasurable pursuits are perhaps meant to remind the former of how it feels to be the latter, slow down time, and escape the never-ending rat race and the manufactured reality of digital screens.

“Between Folds” explores the unstable threshold where images emerge through the encounter of gravity, light, and material. The curtain functions as the exhibition’s central device. Historically associated with concealment and illusion, it is approached here less as a symbolic motif than as an optical and phenomenological system. Its folds are not composed but produced through physical forces—tension, weight, handling, and time.

The paintings emerge through an iterative dialogue between physical staging, photography, generative AI, and oil painting. It is precisely within this space—between folds of different image-making techniques—that painting acts as a site of translation, slowing the velocity of synthetic images and transforming their luminous surfaces into tactile presence through successive layers of oil and exposed linen.

In “Between Folds”, painting delays the interval before certainty arrives instead of confirming the authority of photography or artificial intelligence. Ultimately, it constructs the conditions under which images emerge and transform—allowing perception itself to remain fluid and unresolved.
