Equity Gallery is pleased to present “Synesthesia,” a group exhibition featuring Will Maddoxx, Julie Schenkelberg, and Yena Seo-Yeon Park.

Synesthesia (noun) — the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body.

“Synesthesia” stems from the practices of three contemporary artists who utilize the canvas and gallery environment as sites of rigorous phenomenological inquiry. Operating at the intersection of gestural abstraction and monumental assemblage, Maddoxx, Schenkelberg, and Park interrogate the friction between isolation and accumulation, stasis and collapse. Their works translate raw materiality and fragmented visual data into complex, affectively charged spatial environments.

Yena Seo-Yeon Park’s atmospheric canvases juxtapose indeterminate, blurred silhouettes with dense, impasto abstract marks, capturing moments of profound stillness within destabilizing, entropic fields. Will Maddoxx investigates the anxieties underlying contemporary subjectivity, deconstructing themes of identity and self-image through aggressive compositional cropping, painterly erasures, and gestural obliterations. Extending these two-dimensional tensions into the architecture of the gallery, Julie Schenkelberg constructs monumental, site-specific installations and high-relief structures from domestic remnants and post-industrial materials.

Collectively, the artists delineate a topography of structural resilience, exploring the raw, mechanical operations of systemic rupture and the subsequent, forced integration of form.

“Synesthesia” will be on view from September 10 through October 10, alongside Wade Schaming’s concurrent solo exhibition, “Easy Feelings.” Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, noon–6 PM.

Equity Gallery is pleased to present “Easy Feelings,” a solo exhibition of new work by Wade Schaming.

Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, September 10, from 6–8 PM! Additional programming will include an Artist Talk on Saturday, October 3, from 4–6 PM.

“Easy Feelings” presents a body of new geometric colorfield paintings that embody a minimalist, process-oriented visual language defined by geometric restraint, stark tonality, and tactile, serial arrangements. Utilizing unprimed surfaces, rhythmic mark-making, and repeated graphic motifs, often derived from custom stamps, the compositions emphasize raw surface materiality while establishing a sense of spatial balance and structure. Conceptually, these two-dimensional works extend Schaming’s broader sculptural ethos of assemblage and personal archiving, interrogating themes of memory, impermanence, and the transformation of the everyday into systematic formal arrangements.

“Easy Feelings” is co-curated by Equity Gallery Associate Director Joey Vadapalas and artist Christopher Stout.

The exhibition will be on view from September 10 through October 10, alongside the concurrent group exhibition, “Synesthesia,” featuring Will Maddoxx, Julie Schenkelberg, and Yena Seo-Yeon Park. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, noon–6 PM.

"Echoes of Place" features three artists whose work explores the environments around them through direct observation and studio practice. Moving between painting on location and working from memory, each artist offers a distinct interpretation of place shaped by personal experience.

“My work grows out of sustained, on-site engagement with landscape. I begin by painting directly in the environment, responding to shifting light, weather, sound, and mood. Often, these on-site studies serve as the foundation for larger acrylic paintings developed in the studio. I work intuitively, balancing representation with abstraction, structure with improvisation, allowing the painting to evolve through physical, responsive mark-making."—Carol Fabricatore

"Echoes of Place" features three artists whose work explores the environments around them through direct observation and studio practice. Moving between painting on location and working from memory, each artist offers a distinct interpretation of place shaped by personal experience.

"Painting on site with watercolor, I think of my work as a visual diary, an accumulation of moments shaped by attention, movement, and memory. I am drawn to city streets, gardens, and interiors, but what unites these experiences is my search for pattern. I find it in the repetition of windows, the irregularity of stonework, the scatter of flowers, and the geometry of tables and chairs. Pattern becomes a way of seeing and understanding the world.—Susan Greenstein

"I follow in the footsteps of my family as a plein air painter. My grandfather, parents and sisters all painted on location. I paint storefronts, street corners, park-settings and the landscape of Brooklyn and Manhattan. I enjoy setting up my easel in front of an old building or structure, almost as if I were painting a portrait. I work to figure out the silhouette shapes, the angles and curves that give character—all while the light is changing and altering my subject in moments." —Janet Pedersen

Other times I rework my painting back in my studio, where I have an opportunity to take my painting into a new or different realm, if that is what it takes to find a better sense of balance or wholeness. Please join us this Friday, July 31, from 4–6 PM for an Artist Walkthrough of "Echoes of Place." Exhibiting artist Carol Fabricatore will lead visitors through the exhibition, speaking about her work, process, and the ideas behind the paintings on view. The walkthrough offers a chance to hear directly from the artist and ask questions in an informal setting. Light refreshments will be served.
