As part of Armory Sculpture 2026, Goya Contemporary Gallery presents Sonya Clark’s Edifice & Mortar (2018), a monumental sculptural installation the artist describes as “a wall, a flag, and a document.”

Constructed from hand-cast bricks inscribed with the Declaration of Independence and bound with African American hair collected from Richmond salons, the work confronts the foundational role of Black labor in building the United States—exposing the enduring tensions between the nation’s democratic ideals and its history of enslavement.

Manuel Mathieu’s Shhrine (2025), created in collaboration with Juliette Karagueuzoglou, explores memory, spirituality, and the invisible through scent—an immersive installation that diffuses fragrance as atmosphere, transforming scent into a medium for ritual and collective experience.

Pictured here: Ciel et terre, from Manuel Mathieu ’s solo exhibition Unity in Darkness at PHI, Montreal, part of the artist’s ongoing exploration of memory and immersive environments.

Presented by Galerie Barbara Thumm and Carolina Nitsch Contemporary Art, Kaloki Nyamai’s Tusukane (2023) is a monumental textile-based installation blending Kenyan—and particularly Kamba—traditions with contemporary narrative, through stitched canvas, acrylic paint, rubber threads, and photo transfers.

The immersive work explores memory, care, and collective resilience, offering a powerful meditation on identity, history, and the shared experience of living through global crisis.

Tusukane is part of Armory Sculpture 2026, inspired by the 1913 Armory Show; the section features ambitious, large-scale sculptures throughout the fair’s floor plan.
