Introducing Lux Nova, the chamber orchestra for our May 2 concert, A Great Light!

Lux Nova is a chamber orchestra comprised of some of New York City's most distinguished musicians: artists who illuminate not only through their high-level artistry, but through the lives they lead. More than virtuosic performers, the members of Lux Nova are advocates, educators, organizers, and visionaries, united by a shared commitment to justice, equity, and community. The mission aims to inspire a connection with music that promotes meaningful change. Each performance reflects this ethos of bringing a “new light”: presenting music as a powerful force for hope, transformation, and renewal.

This remarkable ensemble will join us for Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and perform Fratres (Arvo Pärt), with their concertmaster, Pauline Kim Harris, performing the solo in the latter piece.

Introducing bass, Matthew Curran, one of our soloists for our May 2 concert, A Great Light!

American bass Matthew Curran is a distinctive voice on the opera and concert stage, as celebrated for his dramatic intelligence as for the beauty and power of his singing. On the operatic stage, he has distinguished himself in a range of roles at companies including Zürich Opera, New York City Opera, Atlanta Opera, Seattle Opera, OperaDelaware, Opera Roanoke, St. Petersburg Opera, and Opera Southwest, among others. A champion of contemporary opera, Mr. Curran has sung in the highly acclaimed Breaking the Waves by Missy Mazzoli (Prototype Festival), Lowell Lieberman’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (Odyssey Opera), Carlisle Floyd's Prince of Players and Britten's Owen Wingrave (Little Opera Theater of New York), and Stephen Schwartz's Séance on a Wet Afternoon (American Opera Projects and New York City Opera).

He is a regular soloist on the concert stage in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Handel's Messiah, the Mozart, Verdi, Brahms, and Fauré Requiems, and the major works of Johann Sebastian Bach. With a love of sacred music rooted in his formative years in the choir at Trinity Church in Princeton, New Jersey, Curran is active as both choral singer and soloist, and sings regularly with Voices of Ascension. He has been particularly lauded for his portrayals of Jesus in Bach's St. Matthew Passion, and served as Artist-in-Residence with the Long Island Choral Society. His discography includes the Grammy-nominated Tyberg Masses with the South Dakota Chorale, Edwin Cheney in Daron Hagen's Shining Brow — recorded live with the Buffalo Philharmonic under JoAnn Falletta for Naxos — and a Harmonia Mundi recording of sacred music from 17th-century Rome. Mr. Curran holds a Master of Music from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a Bachelor of Music, cm laude, from Loyola University New Orleans, where he most recently returned as a guest artist for the Floyd Centennial.

Mezzo-soprano KATE MARONEY is a versatile concert soloist in repertoire from Bach to the 21st-century. Kate has appeared over many years with the LA Opera, Baldwin Wallace Bach Festival, Bangor Symphony Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Blue Hill Bach, Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, New York City Ballet, Res Facta, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Seraphic Fire, Berkshire Choral Festival, Voices of Ascension, TENET Vocal Artists, Ekmeles, Carmel Bach Festival, Opera Grand Rapids, Beth Morrison Projects, Bard SummerScape, Trinity Wall Street, LA Opera, Lincoln Center Festival, Oregon Bach Festival, Musica Sacra, Bach Collegium San Diego, Princeton Pro Musica, Bach Vespers Holy Trinity, Mark Morris Dance Group, Yale Choral Artists, Metropolitan Opera, American Opera Projects, The Crossing, and Clarion.

Kate toured internationally with a production of Einstein in the Beach where she sang numbers really fast on five continents. Kate loves to premiere new works and has collaborated with Philip Glass, David Lang, Michael Gordon, Martin Bresnick, Julia Wolfe, Missy Mazzoli, Matthew Ricketts, Hannah Lash, Nina Young, Dominick Argento, Christopher Cerrone, and Ted Hearne. She is featured on Seraphic Fire’s recording of Hildegard von Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum, a quartet recording with David Lang of the little match girl passion, and Lorelei’s Beaufort Scales by Chris Cerrone, for which she was nominated for a Grammy in 2025.

She proudly holds a D.M.A. from Eastman, degrees from SUNY Purchase and Yale, and teaches at Mannes and at Yale. Kate lives in Brooklyn with musician-husband, Red Wierenga, and their son, Ossian. Receiving acclaim for his “emotionally charged interpretation” and “exciting burnished brilliance,” (The Oregonian) tenor David Vanderwal remains in high demand for his clarion lyric voice. Mr. Vanderwal is often a featured artist in oratorio and opera engagements including, The American Bach Soloists, The Orchestra of St. Luke's, The Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Oregon, Texas, and Carmel Bach Festivals, the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony, New York Collegium, and Tafelmusik, as well as many other orchestras across the nation. Most recently, he was featured as Evangelist and soloist for the Greater Bridgeport Symphony's production of Bach's St. John Passion, was featured as the title role in Britten's St. Nicolas at Trinity Wall St., NYC, and also performed the title role in the premiere of David Hughes' new opera, Gracchus, in Connecticut.

An active choral artist based in New York, Mr. Vanderwal often performs intimate salon recitals and has been a core ensemble member of several choirs, including The Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Clarion, Western Wind, The Four Nations Ensemble, and The Waverly Consort. He has recorded under the Allegro, Delos, Pro Musica Gloriae, and Koch International record labels and has won several awards in national vocal competitions.

Soprano SONYA HEADLAM performs repertoire ranging from early music to newly composed works across opera, oratorio, art song, and chamber music. She appears frequently as a soloist in large-scale sacred and symphonic works with major orchestras, and collaborates regularly with Apollo’s Fire and Trinity Choir, the GRAMMY-nominated New York City-based professional ensemble.

A committed interpreter of contemporary music, her recent highlights include works such as Julia Wolfe’s Steel Hammer, Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians, Ellen Reid’s dreams of the new world, and Tyshawn Sorey’s Monochromatic Light (Afterlife), among others.

She has also engaged deeply with the music of Ignatius Sancho, the 18th-century Black British composer, writer, and abolitionist. She is the featured soprano on the 2025 Centaur recording Sancho: Music of an 18th-Century Black Englishman with Raritan Players. Additional recordings include In the Salon of Madame Brillon (Acis, 2023) and a forthcoming recording of Trevor Weston’s Reflections.

Come with us this spring as we take a round-trip musical journey into, out of, and back into the light. The shimmering, a ca****la harmonies of “O Radiant Dawn” (James MacMillan) yield to the string and percussion transcription of Fratres (Arvo Pärt) — mysterious, agitated at times, then quiet but not quieting. Finally, the stormy start of the Lord Nelson Mass (Missa in Angustiis) (F.J. Haydn) breaks into brilliant melody and promises to leave you feeling uplifted.

Featuring soloists Sonya Headlam, Soprano, Kate Maroney, Mezzo, David Vanderwal, Tenor, and Matthew Curran, Bass, and directed by John Wilson.
