Fou Gallery否画廊 Fou is an innovative, organic art community based in New York. fougallery.com

Founded in 2013, Fou is an innovative, organic art community located in a historic 1905 New York brownstone. Fundamentally believing that art is a way of life, Fou Gallery is dedicated to promoting the creative talents and projects of our time. Fou began with a basic recognition that contemporary art and culture must address critical real-life challenges faced by our society through holistic, sustainable, and spiritual practices. Fou represents an alternative to the commercial model of mainstream galleries, and serves as a habitat that nurtures a harmonious relationship between the earth and ourselves.

✨ Highlighting 𝗔𝗶 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘁𝗮’s 𝘿𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚.

In 𝘿𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚, three towering forms of folded aluminum rise against a luminous sky streaked with gold and violet, their curling ribbons echoing one another in near-symmetrical rhythm. Developed from images Makita creates by folding aluminum sheets in Photoshop, the painting transforms industrial material into something closer to movement itself — figures caught mid-gesture, repeating and varying like dancers in formation. The metallic surfaces refract light in constant flux, mirroring the sunset behind them, as structure and motion become indistinguishable from one another.

✨ What a beautiful opening for 𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙈𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮!

Thank you to everyone who joined us this past Saturday to celebrate the exhibition by 𝗔𝗶 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘁𝗮 (Ai Makita 牧田愛) and 𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗵𝘂 𝗟𝗶 (Sizhu Li) — an evening filled with great energy, thoughtful conversations, and new connections around questions of technology, motion, and what it means to remain an individual today.

Many thanks to Kinésique (Kinésique) for providing the beautiful ballet outfits for our team!

Grateful to the artists and everyone who made the night so memorable 🤍

𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙈𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 is on view through November 8.

Suspended aluminum sheets curve through the gallery, driven by programmed industrial fans into a live, percussive environment of moving metallic waves. Originally designed to interact with bodies of water, 𝙈𝙤𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 evokes a surreal night-sea landscape — tide-like, rhythmic, continuously shifting 🌊

The installation has traveled from Viborg Kunsthal in Denmark to Lille Grand Palais in France and across the US, creating a shared moment that bridges distant audiences.

In 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙙, curled ribbons of aluminum coil and overlap across the canvas, their polished surfaces catching light in bands of silver, graphite, and faint iridescence. Developed from images Makita creates by folding aluminum sheets in Photoshop, the painting renders industrial material with meticulous precision. The title suggests a gathering of bodies, yet no figures appear — the “crowd” is a mass of forms pressed together, individuated only by how each catches the light.

✨ Fou Gallery is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition —

𝑺𝒚𝒏𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑴𝒐𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚
𝐀𝐢 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐭𝐚 | 𝐒𝐢𝐳𝐡𝐮 𝐋𝐢

⚡️ What does it mean to remain an individual today? As digital acceleration reshapes how we move, perceive, and exist, two artists turn to material as a way of thinking through the question.
Makita’s oil paintings — developed through folded aluminum, Photoshop, and AI — render labyrinths of pipes and conduits that resemble circulatory systems or invisible technological networks made visible. Li‘s kinetic sculptures of aluminum sheets and programmed fans build live, percussive environments where opposing forces meet in rhythms of tension and equilibrium.

Neither offers answers. Both offer tools for looking closer.

🎨 𝗔𝗶 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘁𝗮 (b. 1985, Chiba, Japan) is a painter based between New York and Tokyo, whose oil paintings develop through folded aluminum, Photoshop, and the AI model Midjourney. A recipient of the Taro Okamoto Award and the 1st Terrada Art Award, she has exhibited at Baert Gallery LA, Yu-Hsiu Museum of Art Taiwan, and Chilli Art Projects London.

⚙️ 𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗵𝘂 𝗟𝗶 (b. 1990, Sichuan, China) is a Houston-based kinetic artist working with aluminum sheets, industrial fans, and programmed motion. She has exhibited at Viborg Kunsthal Denmark, Morris Museum New Jersey, and Alabama Contemporary Art Center, and received the 2025 Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

At a moment when our attention is increasingly pulled outward by speed and instability, we invite you to turn inward.

At the last week of the exhibition, we invite you to take a quiet look back at 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚.

In the rush of the city, how often do you allow yourself to pause? How do you tune into the subtle flow of energy that connects body, mind, and the natural world?

Traverse these spaces where abstract bodies, imagined organisms, and reconstructed botanical forms meet. We hope these works invite you to move through them as you might a breath cycle, finding a moment of meditation and spiritual grounding in the unseen dimensions of everyday life.
