That too, was part of your dream and you realize everything‘s gonna return to normal tomorrow, at least for a while. You never want to say goodbye to all these people that you love Kathy Erdem Zoe Burak Ashley Qixuan Ethan. I admire all of them. Yes this dream is coming to an end. I don’t know how everything’s going to turn out, but I’ll fight to make this happen again.

12/21, 22 Tongues: Grand Street Settlement edition:
This time I had the chance to do this performance together with these New York seniors. It wasn’t just a performance. Over the course of two weeks, we got to know each other little by little, sharing our life stories. After telling them, we translated them, then told them again—back and forth, endlessly. Spending time with them, I felt as if I was inside a kind of cycle.

They are at an old age, while I’m only 25. But as I kept listening to their stories, I began to notice a pattern. What I’m going through right now seems to be just a small part of what they are describing—their entire lives. There are deaths and farewells, and also the beginnings of new stages in life. They feel like a reflection of my own life, and I, too, am a reflection of theirs.

Looking at their faces and listening to their voices, even though everyone speaks with a different tone and style—some quiet, some talking nonstop—silence doesn’t mean they have nothing to say. You can tell from their reactions whether the life stories being retold by others have something to do with them or not.

This project wasn’t some big production, nor was it the kind of theatre or film I usually imagine myself doing. But can the emotional power of the stories they told really be compared to that of scripted drama? And are the audience’s responses something that should make me rethink what theatre actually means?

今次有機會同一啲阿婆阿姨阿叔一齊做呢個表演，其實唔單只係一個表演二個禮拜嘅時間我哋由淺至深認識大家同各大家講吓人生故事，然後講完又翻譯翻譯又再講講嚟講去都講唔完同佢哋一齊相處，我就覺得好似自己係一個輪迴咁佢哋一把年紀我仲有25歲，但我聽嚟聽吓嗰啲故事總有一個規律我諗我而家經歷緊嘅嘢淨係佢哋講緊佢哋一生經歷緊嘅嘢當中有死亡又告別有人生生階段嘅開始佢哋就好似我自己人生嘅倒影而我亦都係佢哋嘅倒影望見佢哋嘅面上聽佢哋嘅聲音雖然每一個人講嘅語氣同埋表達方式都好唔同有啲沉默有啲一輪嘴咁講，但沉默唔代表佢哋冇嘢講，你可以從佢哋嘅反應得知其他人斷述嘅人生故事同佢哋有冇有關呢？呢個project雖然唔係啲咩大製作亦都唔係我成日想像自己做嘅話劇或者電影但係佢哋講嘅故事同話劇感染力又有冇得比呢？觀眾嘅迴響亦值唔值得我深思話劇嘅定義呢?

I’m not sitting on my laurels. I’m writing about my feelings after Thank You For Listening, a community based play. It’s a weird feeling to stick with a “community” when I’ve left my hometown. As if I couldn’t believe that I belong. As if everything given isn’t permanent. Good times do pass, they pass way faster than tough times. That’s why I’m not letting this one slide. So this can be my remedy when tough time comes. “Hey, at least I’ve had this before.” “At least I’ve done a show that means so much to me. It’s not made-up, this story. It’s breathed with life from people. That much I know. Wow, damn, what an honor.

Thank you for such a beautiful gathering about mother tongue and recognizing our roots. Especially this iteration I've experienced real growth. The vibes in the room were priceless and unfathomable unless you're there.

6/20 Thank You for Listening ‘25 , at Sara Roosevelt Park “the pit”

This project means a lot to me. From workshopping to writing to actually putting it in my body is such a ride but a rich adventure. I’m beyond humbled to listening to everyone’s story at the Open Door Senior. In no position am I to ask for your permission to put some of your words into an art piece but it made me cry and smile to just accept the love you have for your little comrade from the Chinese family. Thank you thank you thank you for letting me listen to you.

MOCA PERFORMS – Scenes from Interior Chinatown, a dynamic performance that brings select acts from Interior Chinatown to life. Featuring an ensemble of actors, the program transforms MOCA’s exhibitions into a living stage, offering an immersive theatrical experience.

Willis Wu doesn’t perceive himself as the protagonist in his own life: he’s merely Generic Asian Man. Sometimes he gets to be Background Oriental Making a Weird Face or even Disgraced Son, but always he is relegated to a prop.
