For 100 years, China Institute has built bridges through culture, education, dialogue, and exchange. As we enter our second century, we are deeply grateful for this recognition and excited to continue connecting communities through the power of cultural understanding.

Last week, more than 200 New Yorkers spent two delightful days with Master Hu Wenge, the only male protégé of the Mei School of Peking Opera.

🎵After gracing our Centennial Gala with a captivating excerpt on May 28th, he performed one of the Mei School's most celebrated works, Farewell My Concubine, at the United Nations Chinese Language Program.

The most immersive event of the series took place last Saturday: “Master Class: Hu Wenge in Performance and in Context,” held in conjunction with our gallery's current exhibition, "The Dancing Goddess: Mei Lanfang in America." Master Hu delivered a deeply moving, full-makeup performance of the operatic classic The Drunken Beauty, the quintessential expression of Mei School artistry, at once graceful and powerful. Two distinguished scholars guided the audience through the historical and cultural depth of Sinitic opera, while during the Q&A, Master Hu offered additional live demonstrations that captivated and enlightened all present.

✨ In a world of rapid change, the transmission of performance art, transforming history into living beauty, is an act of cultural inheritance.

A historic evening for a historic milestone. ✨

On May 28, China Institute of America celebrated its Centennial Gala at Cipriani 42, honoring 100 years of cultural exchange, dialogue, and friendship between China and the United States.

We were proud to recognize our Centennial Gala Honorees: the Nixon family; the Bush family; the Rockefeller family; Tung Chee Hwa; Ming Hsieh and Eva Hsieh; Professor Kai Li and Professor Yi Cui.

With our Board of Trustees, leadership, supporters, and friends, we celebrated the legacy and future of China Institute of America.

In 1930, Mei Lanfang made his historic Broadway debut with support from the newly founded China Institute.

This Centennial Week, Peking opera master Hu Wenge 胡文阁 honors that legacy with The Drunken Beauty at our Centennial Gala on May 28 and “Master Class” on May 30.

As the only direct Mei School protégé carrying the male dan tradition, Master Hu will bring history full circle through song, movement, and timeless emotion.
