Some moments from Thursday evening’s opening of the reimagined European Galleries with new skylights at the Met, the stunning culmination of five years of multi-departmental collaboration. The galleries’ feature thoughtful new groupings that include wonderful recent acquisitions as well as several gems brought out of storage. Familiar friends appear rested and refreshed against richly-hues walls, especially those who have benefited from the stellar care of the Paintings Conservation Department. A selection of works in other media, including ceramic, bronze and glass, add a three-dimensional voice to the cultural narratives introduced via the paintings. Every now and then, the distant past is paired with modern or contemporary sensibilities to expand discussion and encourage deeper looking. It will take many visits before I will once again know this part of the museum like the back of my hand, but I welcome the task…
On a personal note, it was also a lovely opportunity to catch up with friends new and old, and to be reminded that true connections easily withstand the passage of time.

On the heels of thinking about women’s historical contributions to manifold art forms in relation to my essay for Making her Mark, it was exciting to see so many works in different media by women artists at yesterday’s gala preview of The Art Show at the Armory…Some things that caught my eye:

Sheila Hicks at Sikkema Jenkins and Co.
Kathy Butterly at James Cohan
Rosemary Beck at Van Doren Waxter
Sue Fuller at Luxembourg + Co
Emily Mason at Miles McEnery Gallery
Hellen van Meene at Yancey Richardson Gallery
Jutta Haeckel at Hosfelt Gallery

My warmest congratulations to , and on the opening of Making Her Mark at the Baltimore Museum of Art this past Saturday—I was so sorry I couldn’t be there! This extraordinary exhibition sheds new light on the contributions of women working in myriad art forms in Europe from 1400-1800. It was such a joy to receive the catalogue, to which I contributed an essay on the roles of women in the silk industries of Italy, England and France during the period covered by the exhibition. Pictured here is a detail from an engraving from the Vermis Sericus (ca. 1595), which shows women incubated silkworm eggs wrapped in handkerchiefs in their décolletage, one of several ways women were involved in sericulture. Contemporary treatises often advised against using women who were menstruating or otherwise “infirmed” for this task for fear it might damage the worms!
Superbly designed, richly illustrated and full of fascinating information, the catalogue contains essays by Andaleeb Badiee Banta, Alexa Griest, Babette Bohn, Madeleine C. Viljoen, Brittany Luberda, Virginia Treanor, Paris A. Spies-Gans, and Theresa Kutasz Christensen.
For a link to the catalogue on Amazon, please see bio.
Congratulations again to all involved!

I was just fortunate enough to see the Manet/Degas show at the Musée d’Orsay which I look forward to catching again at the Met. Among the many works that gave me cause for pause was this composition by Degas—a longtime favorite in terms of (de)constructing notions of “Modernism.” There are many narratives at play here; one of the most interesting to me concerns how the artist jostles between the expressive possibilities of disembodied clothing versus worn clothing. This comes across in Degas’ staging of the scene. He creates a sea of hat stands, inspired by contemporary shops but also illustrations from fashion magazines such as La R***e de la Mode. At the same time, he positions the woman in a way that fleetingly suggests one of these hats is actually sitting on her head. It is a self-conscious illusion, a visual pun, a construct that happily announces itself as such. It asks the viewer to wonder whether the wearer gives her hat character, or perhaps it is the other way around? It’s all about ambiguity, even the identity of the woman—is she a shop girl or a client?—or the way Degas handles space. It compels the viewer to think about collapsibility, the beauty of flatness, about semblance and reality, and the power of a vantage point…In that respect it was fascinating to see this painting alongside the museum’s Chez La Modiste of 1882 (3) in which Degas takes several of these preoccupations to a new extreme. The last image shows a full shot of the installation which also thoughtfully includes Madame Jeantaud devant un Mirroir (4-5).

Edgar Degas, The Millinery Shop, c. 1879-1886. Oil on canvas. The Art Institute, Chicago.

In that golden hour, you’ll find that time can be your friend. It’s a special place…Where the tallest grasses carry the scent of the sun the longest, and the only things that rush are bodies of water. Dreams are plump and soft there, and meant to be enjoyed while counting clouds. In that golden hour, gestures glimmer and glow, and even the roses know to take advantage of every moment.

Youth is fueled by that ferocious energy that comes from often dancing on the edge and things feeling new even when they’re not. The trick is to hang onto that juice, and to never fear living quietly out loud or finding harmony where others might miss it. The trick is to accept that pink is really just a lighter shade of red, and that lines should be drawn, and crossed, but never erased….
