Open Call: Artist Residency | APPLY BY JUN 25 | New York

UMPRUM’s Department of Fine Arts, in collaboration with Czech Center New York and Flux Factory, is offering two residency opportunities in New York for recent KVU graduates.

The September 2026 residency is intended for artists developing a new project or artistic research. Projects should respond to themes explored in Station for Paused Forecasting (2025), including uncertainty, anticipation, crisis, and the changing landscapes of contemporary life.
Selected artists will receive airfare, accommodation, studio space, and per diem support.

Residency: September 1–21, 2026
Application deadline: June 25, 2026
Eligibility: Recent KVU graduates, up to 5 years after graduation

Deep Nature Listening
⏰Tuesday, June 16, 7:30 PM | National Sawdust

Immerse yourself in an evening of sound, ecology, and deep listening with philosopher-musician David Rothenberg, acoustician Benjamin Gottesman, and the New Cicada Trio, featuring acclaimed Czech musician Iva Bittová, Timothy Hill, and Rothenberg.

The program includes the NYC premiere of Rothenberg’s Eleven Paths to Animal Music, a work shaped by natural soundscapes recorded around the world, from frogs in the Amazon to nightingales in the Camargue, leafcutter ants in Costa Rica, and a lake in Brandenburg. Alongside the performance, Gottesman will share how acoustic monitoring is changing the way we understand and protect the natural world.

Bittová and Hill return to New York audiences after appearing earlier this year at Bohemian National Hall with Chimera, where they joined Steve Gorn, Michael Bisio, and Antonín Fajt for an evening of spontaneous improvisation across jazz, folk, and global traditions.

Presented by NationalSawdust+ in partnership with BirdLife International and Cornell University’s K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics.

Czech short animated film featured at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival!

Czech director Andrea Szelesová and producer Kristina Husová present their film Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe! for the first time in the United States.

It will be featured twice as part of Shorts: Whoopi’s Wonderful World of Animation.

According to director Andrea Szelesová many of her previous films were suitable for young audiences but Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe! is the first film she made, specifically aimed at children.

Kaprálová: Screening + Panel Discussion
Tuesday, June 16, 7 PM | Czech Center Cinema

An evening dedicated to Vítězslava Kaprálová, the brilliant Czech composer and conductor whose short life left a lasting mark on 20th-century music.

Petr Záruba’s documentary Kaprálová follows her final years through letters sent home, archival materials, and contemporary interpretations of her music. At twenty-two, Kaprálová left for Paris to study at the École Normale de Musique. Three years later, she died in France at just twenty-five. In that brief span, she conducted the BBC Orchestra, won the Smetana Prize, and created a body of work that would later reach major concert stages, including the BBC Proms and Carnegie Hall.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on Kaprálová’s life, music, and legacy, with director Petr Záruba and Robinson McClellan, Mary Flagler Cary Curator of Music Manuscripts at the Morgan Library & Museum. Moderated by Brenda Vongova and introduced by Tereza Porybná.
