TLDR; Come witness a storytelling of * and brainstorm with community to prepare for coming fires, both ecological and social! 🔥

When/Where: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2024 from 6pm - 9pm at the OAKLAND ASIAN CULTURAL CENTER. RSVP at the link in bio ()

We invite you to share stories you carry— and consider which to extinguish, which to warm and which to set ablaze. With fire as our lens, we’ll create a healing space, a grief tending, a gathering to organize community, and a storytelling/image ideation to examine literal and metaphorical fires in our world.

_________________________________

The world is on fire. We weather severe heatwaves, scorching droughts, and vicious wildfires, that fuel our collective rage. In the wake of these disasters—we root together to dream beyond violent cycles of extraction, exploitation and injustice.

There is a steady and kind flame being tended in community— centered in care of one another, being witness to and in support of each other’s grief, trailblazing paths to solidarity and liberation. When our ancestors were in good kinship to fire it helped us shapeshift, as well as share stories and food in warmth. With this principle, we will explore our collective narrative, discerning which stories to extinguish, which to warm and which to set ablaze.

*This event is part of a larger participatory process to create a image depicting liberatory shifts in the entire state of California, as a metaphor for global justice and held by the guiding questions:

What world do we want to live in on these lands?

What world do we need to birth? Dar a luz?
___________________________________

Maximum of 30 spots available.
This is a masks-required event.
NOTAFLOF (no one turned away for lack of funds). Herbal wildfire care kits will be given out to all participants! Food will be provided.

This event is a collaboration between Weaving Spirits and The Callegory. It is part of our upcoming programming focusing on fire tending.

to our residency with in Bakersfield, where we led a storytelling + visioning to generate research/concept ideas for the upcoming Climax poster.

There is a depth and swath of narratives swirling throughout and within California— the dominant ones in the coasts, the nestled ones in the forests, the hidden ones in the corners, the industrial narratives in urban cities and the sacred ones in its history. While the issues experienced here are local, there are national and global echoes and this project is an intervention to connect them all. Stay tuned on how to join and support this process! 🙏🏽

The California Allegory (Callegory) is an arts activism and narrative organizing project, nurturing coalition-based power and embodied storytelling to spur sustained, collective action. Using a powerful image called the Exposition created over four years, we will illuminate oppression and liberation in the Bay-Delta bioregion through storytelling, and dream about a larger, state-wide illustration drawing power from local to global movements for social, economic and climate justice.

Light refreshments will be provided. To respect the story, we will start promptly at 6:30pm. BYOI (bring-your-own instruments for a decompression jam)! 🎶

SLIDING SCALE DONATION: $10-$20 but NOTAFLOF (no one turned away for lack of funds) 💵

"The Spirit of California"
by Tianna Renee
(otherwise known as El-P)

Your skin is golden and soft you are blessed with good genes,

I have worked this land
The sun, soil, and water has brined my skin

Your knowledge is expansive you are naturally intelligent,

I have survived genocide, colonization, drought, and exploitation
Thinking is a luxury, survival is what has created my mind

Your produce is life giving,

I am not allowed to eat the harvest,
Only to tend to it,
How does it taste?

Your recipes are unique and flavorful,

The ceremonies we preform to make our food are the ingredients that you had never felt,
Until you stole them from our hearts

You are so strong for a female,

All strength is derived from the divine feminine,
Mother Earth,
My physical strength is only because,
I am holding together this earth in my heart

My people weep,
From a window,
Adjacent to your stairwell,
You step on shifted, manipulated land of my people to add commas to your debt,
To take years off of your life,
To experience something more than taste and sight,

California is my name

: At one point, the California Beehive poster was still a work-in-progress. In this video, Orion (Ryan) Camero and the organizing of Restore the Delta won the 2015 Brower Youth Awards for this very project, at a stage where a lot was still in the works! A lot of progress has happened since this video was shot :)

Take a walk down memory lane and check it out!

"El Rio de las Calaveras"
by Michael Gallagher
(otherwise known as the Blue Flame)

Panning for gold in the river of skulls
Calaveras county
jaw on the jetty
bones in the bushes
steelheads migrating like the bayonets of colonizers spear-fishing
destiny in their wake
questions kindling fate
what waves do I create?
what ripples reap these riddles?
I dip the porous pan and find gold teeth in the
mud
they bit the hand that plated meat and
cupped blood
marsh minerals sparkle and slip between fingers
and my eyes are the strainer sifting mundane for glimmers
beyond the gleam of glamour
past the allure of glory
basking in the muck and mosquito
precious to all people
shining behind veils
adorning the sore legs and pushing the
backs of those hunched over the streams
I would trade metal for your meaning
I will toss back the bounty
but if you find your skull
instead of gold
know
I am fulfilled
