Join us at Dia Beacon on Saturday, September 12 for full day of programming celebrating the artist Hélio Oiticica.   Photo: On White Wall (On White Wall)

Hélio Oiticica was a groundbreaking visual artist and theorist whose diverse practice spanned sculpture, drawing, painting, installation, and performance. “Grande Núcleo” (Grand Nucleus) (1960–66) pictured here, is on view at Dia Beacon, and stands out as one of Oiticica’s most engaging environments.

On Saturday, start the day with our family-friendly program Saturday Studio at 10:30 am. For this workshop, participants will create their own “parangolés” to wear during the afternoon “parangolé” parade or leave for others to activate. The program is free but space is limited. Register at our link in bio.

Then at 12 pm, join art historian Irene V. Small and Donna De Salvo, (Donna De Salvo) Dia senior adjunct curator, special projects, in a conversation moderated by Humberto Moro, (Humberto Moro III) deputy director of program and chief curator.

The panel discussion is followed by “Parangolé” Parade, a celebratory procession through the galleries led by the percussive Brazilian samba ensemble Batalá New York (BATALÁ NEW YORK), activating Oiticica’s landmark performative garments or “Parangolés.” The procession will conclude in Dia Beacon’s West Garden, where visitors are invited to continue enjoying the music outdoors.

Engaging with daylight as a concept, a material, a resource, and a political force, the works in ”De sol a sol” point to the layered sociopolitical conditions of the East End of Long Island.⁠

“David Lamelas: The Machine” at Dia Chelsea is an exhibition comprised of three parts—a presentation, a film program, and a performance series. A foundational yet overlooked figure of 1960s and ’70s art, Lamelas has produced paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, performances, and films, bridging Conceptual, Minimalist, and Pop approaches to art making.

Join us at Dia Chelsea, open Wednesday through Saturday, from 12–6 pm to experience the artist’s variety of works on view. Be sure to stop by our program space, now showing the third chapter of this program: three short films directed by Lamelas.

Robert Ryman pursued a range of techniques throughout his career and was preoccupied with ways of letting paint engage with surface. He approached a painting’s underlying support as a stage for the performative display of brush marks, strokes, and the exploration of texture. Thus, each work is a surface rather than a “picture."⁠

“It is just not my inclination to make small work.”— Michael Heizer⁠

The concept of negative space is critical to Heizer’s work. His work “North, East, South, West” (1967/2002) at Dia Beacon presents form as the separation of void and solid mass. The volume of this sculpture is described as absence rather than presence.⁠

As special experience to take in the magnitude of the work, Dia offers a guided, 20-minute walk-through behind the glass of “North, East, South, West” at 9:30 am, Friday through Monday, before the museum opens to the public. Add a stop at Dia Bridgehampton to your summer plans on Long Island. The first floor currently features “Alan Ruiz: De sol a sol,” a new site-responsive commission by artist Alan Ruiz. Engaging with daylight as a concept, a material, a resource, and a political force, the works in ”De sol a sol” point to the layered sociopolitical conditions of the East End of Long Island.

On the second floor is a permanent installation of nine works created by Dan Flavin between 1963 and 1981. Dia Bridgehampton is located at 23 Corwith Avenue, Bridgehampton, New York. Open Friday–Sunday, 11–5 pm (closed 2–2:30 pm daily). Admission is free.
