For 60 years, Music of the Americas has platformed and promoted superb artists and cultural innovators from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada in New York. The MetLife Foundation Music of the Americas Concert Series, recipient of the 2014 CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, fulfills an essential pa

rt of the cultural mission of Americas Society, annually showcasing dozens of talented artists hailing from across the hemisphere. The primary venue for the series is Americas Society’s own Salon Simón Bolivar, an expansive room in the organization’s neo-federal-style headquarters with wide windows, a 15-foot ceiling, and silk fabric walls. Music of the Americas has collaborated with other presenters, including Lincoln Center Out of Doors and the National Museum of the American Indian, and has also presented artists at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall and the Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space. Music of the Americas seeks to further Americas Society’s mission by engaging artists and concertgoers alike in meaningful dialogue through a shared love of excellent music. The series aims to present artists that are both superb musicians in their own right and cultural ambassadors of myriad social and musical traditions, creating a vibrant space and a unique opportunity to hear distinctive and significant music.

Argentine guitarist Carlos Wernicke has participated as a soloist and chamber musician in projects spanning tango, pop, Celtic, early, classical, operatic, and contemporary music. His current activities include the transcription of early music, composition, and arranging. He was awarded First Prize in the Jorge Martínez Zárate Competition. His Partita Porteña, Tres piezas de Buenos Aires, Cien noches cerradas, and other works for solo guitar and guitar duos are published in Canada by Les Productions d'Oz.

From San Lorenzo del Escorial, not far from Madrid, he sent us this version of his arrangement of "Si d'amor pena sentís," an anonymous jewel of a piece from the Cancionero de Palacio, a famous Spanish collection of music from the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

Back in June, we presented the premieres of the winning pieces of our Composition Competition, Diego Tedesco and Carolina Barenbaum, performed by Dan Lippel, guitarist and Mak Grgić. The program also included other pieces by the composers with Anna Urrey and Karen Kim.
