On June 11, experience the art of ornamentation with Abendmusik - New York's Period Instrument String Band and their program of Late Renaissance and Baroque music from Italy and Spain.

Far from simple decoration, ornamentation in 16th and 17-century Italy was a requirement to fully realize the expressive intent of vocal works. As a center of musical innovation of the time, Italian composers began to improvise and embellish motifs in a practice known as passagi di musica. This technique would later be employed in several musical configurations, including instrumental works, and codified in treatises. Enjoy examples from the treatises of Dalla Casa, Rognoni, Bassano, and the Spanish composer Ortiz.

Join us on Thursday, 1:15pm EDT, at St. Malachy's - The Actors' Chapel or on our YouTube channel.
