The AHU series combines live music, performed by leading orchestras and celebrated Broadway actors, lecture, photographs and film from the National Archives, historic American flags, and material culture to explore watershed moments in history.

🌌 On August 27th, 1928, Leon Theremin presented a full program featuring an instrument of his own creation — the “theremin” — to an audience of 12,000 in New York City’s open air Lewisohn Stadium, accompanied by the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Later, in April of 1932, the Theremin Electrical Symphony Orchestra debuted at Carnegie Hall.

🌑 On August 10th, 1966, the Lunar Orbiter 1 launched into space and was the first U.S. spacecraft to orbit the moon. It also took the very first picture of the Earth from the vicitiy of the Moon.

Because of the accomplishments of the Lunar Orbiter 1, mankind will eventually capture an image even more breathtaking... an Earthrise 🌎

📚 On July 28th, 1964, the spacecraft “Ranger 7” headed toward the Moon, capturing more than 4,000 images of the celesial body before crashing into the northern rim of the Sea of Clouds. After 13 unsuccuessful missions in a row, this mission was a major turning point for the USA as it helped to identify the best potential landing locations for future Apollo astronauts.

👨‍🚀 On July 24th, 1969, the crew of Apollo 11 — Neil Armstong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins — safely splashed down into the Pacific Ocean after returning from an historic mission to the Moon and Neil Armstrong’s “giant leap for mankind.”

We are very pleased to share with you that “We Chose to Go to the Moon”, filmed at Carnegie Hall in April of this year, will be coming to PBS on November 10th at 8:00PM EST (check local listings) and becoming available to stream on PBS.org and the PBS app.

This immersive theatrical experience tells the dramatic tale of America’s race to space and decision to land a man on the Moon in one of the most ambitious scientific and exploration achievements in history. Directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, Chess), the program features vignettes and vocal performances by stage and film star Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect, Spring Awakening), Grammy Award nominee Brent Comer (The Outsiders), Claybourne Elder (Company, “The Gilded Age”), TV star Elizabeth Gillies (Netflix’s “Dynasty”), Tony Award nominee Taylor Louderman (Mean Girls), and Grammy and Tony Award-nominee Joy Woods (Gypsy, Six).

🇺🇸 Yesterday was the 250th Birthday of The United States of America 🎆

Every year on the Fourth of July, we celebrate our nation’s creation by raising the American flag, enjoying outdoor BBQs, and spending time with our friends and family. While this holiday historically honors our country formally adopting the Declaration of Independence, there is also nothing more American than coming together within our communities.

We can do remarkable things when we come together. To witness the courage of our nation during some of our biggest challenges in the last 250 years, consider streaming “American Heart in WWI: A Carnegie Hall Tribute” and “The Eyes of the World: From D-Day to VE Day” via PBS Passport 🎞️

📚On June 6th, 1944, the Allied Forces landed on the beaches of Normandy — a pivotal moment in WWII that began the liberation of Western Europe from the N**i occupation. Every year, we remember those brave soldiers who stormed those beaches, and the sacrifices they made for the greater good.

If you’d like to dive into this moment in history and learn more about what it was really like to stand on that beach during such a monumental event, consider streaming “The Eyes of the World: From D-Day to VE Day,” the thrilling story of final eleven months of World War II in Europe as told through the stories and images of those who were really there: Life Magazine photographer Robert Capa, Vogue model-turned-photogjournalist Lee Miller, famed author Ernest Hemingway, and a young solider named Jerry with everything to prove.

“Time will not dim the glory of their deeds.” - The American Battle Monuments Commission 🎖️

On Memorial Day, we honor the heroes who gave their lives for our country. Since 1923, 365 days a year, our friends at The American Battle Monuments Commission have worked to keep the legacies of these great Americans alive. At American History Unbound, we tell their stories on stage and on television, saluting the courage and resilience of the men and women who have sacrificed to keep us free; some that have been lost to history. THANK YOU, MIAMI 🧡

We’re over the Moon to have performed We Chose to Go to the Moon at Miami’s New World Center last weekend. During the production, we had the immense honor of saluting some American heroes:

⭐ Poppy Northcutt, the first woman to work in Mission Control at NASA, who also joined us at our Carnegie Hall performances.
⭐ Captain Kay Hire, former NASA astronaut, and the first woman in the US military to be assigned a combat position.
⭐ Commander Dave Scott, retired test pilot and NASA astronaut, and the seventh person to walk on the Moon.

We are beyond grateful to have had them in our audience and for all they have done and sacrificed to advance America’s space exploration, thrilling and inspiring us along the way.

🌎 An Earthrise in honor of Earth Day 🌎

Just over a year after the iconic “Earthrise” was captured on camera by astronaut William Anders on Christmas Eve, 1968, we celebrated our first Earth Day. Every year, we are reminded of the importance of taking care of the planet we call home.
