NFDC-produced, Goutam Ghose’s masterpiece stands as a definitive pillar of Indian art-house cinema, illustrating how deeply rooted local narratives can achieve universal resonance. This 1987 classic traversed the complicated intersections of tradition and mortality, earning its place on the prestigious global stage.

Its selection for the Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival in 1988 marked a significant moment for Indian filmmakers, proving that authentic storytelling transcends borders. This international acclaim was further solidified when the film secured the Grand Prix (Golden Semurg) at the Tashkent Film Festival, cementing Ghose’s reputation as a visionary director.

Today, we celebrate Antarjali Yatra not just as a film but as a testament to the enduring power of the “Parallel Cinema” movement in India.

The Bengali film “Pathey Holo Deri” (1957) starring the hit romantic duo Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen is reportedly the first ever Bengali film to have a part of it shot in Gevacolor. However, it was Satyajit Ray’s “Kanchenjunga” (1962) that lays claim to being the first full-length Bengali colour film. Shot in Eastman Colour, “Kanchenjunga” was Ray’s first original screenplay and the first time he was shooting in colour. The film tells the story of a wealthy Bengali family on the last day of their vacation in Darjeeling, a hill station at the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga. Andrew Robinson wrote in his book “Satyajit Ray: The Inner Eye”, “There were two reasons why he chose to move into colour. The first, and more important, was the opportunity it offered to reflect the personality of each character through clothes, since none of them changes his clothes during the course of the afternoon. They are identified as much by the clothes they wear (which is so very true of the upper class, says Ray) as by their behavior, making colour a unifying poetic element in the film through the patterns it creates over time. . . The second reason for using colour, was naturally enough, to capture fully the moods of Darjeeling that are integral to the film.” In the words of Ray, “The idea was to have the film starting with sunlight. Then clouds coming, then mist rising, and then the mist disappearing, the cloud disappearing, and then the sun shining on the snow peaks. There is an independent progression to Nature itself, and the story reflects this.”

In a rousing Oscars acceptance speech, Zoë Saldaña gave a shoutout to her family, including her mother and grandmother.

“My grandmother came to this country in 1961," she said. "I am a proud child of immigrant parents with dreams and dignity."

She said she is the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award and added "I know I will not be the last."

She said she was thrilled by "the fact that I’m getting an award for a role where I got to sing and speak in Spanish,” adding, “My grandmother, if she were here, she’d be so delighted.”

It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, “Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.”

It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.
