Mark Lague's Sagrada Família reflects the combination of careful draftsmanship and painterly experience that shaped the artist's career. His early training emphasized drawing as the foundation of his practice, while his years as a background designer and art director in Montreal’s animation industry gave him a strong understanding of composition, perspective, and the visual structure of a scene. Those skills carry naturally into his architectural paintings, where buildings are not simply recorded, but interpreted through light, atmosphere, and brushwork.

Few architectural subjects carry the history of the Sagrada Família. Construction began in 1882, and more than 140 years later, Antoni Gaudí’s extraordinary vision is still being brought to completion. The basilica was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, while this year, Pope Leo XIV returned to Barcelona to commemorate the centenary of Gaudí’s death and bless the newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ. Yet even with the completion of all six central towers, the Sagrada Família remains unfinished, with the monumental Glory façade still to be completed. Laguë’s painting captures the structure at one point in this remarkably long history, offering a view of a building that has evolved across generations and continues to change before the world’s eyes.

Smyylz's “Cracked Blossoms” brings the visual language of street art and graffiti into one of the most enduring subjects in art history: the still life. The flowers are built from fractured, colorful forms, outlined in heavy black and layered with energetic splashes of paint, giving each bloom the look of a piece of urban art.

The gray background is covered with handwritten fragments of words like “LOVE” and “ART,” reminiscent of writing found across a tagged concrete wall. Against this muted surface, the flowers take on an almost neon quality, as though they are growing directly out of the city itself. This contrast between the natural subject and the raw, urban setting is what makes “Cracked Blossoms” particularly distinctive within Smyylz’s work.

Todd M. Casey’s Yellow Sugar Skull uses traditional still-life painting to capture the vivid imagery of Día de los Mu***os. At the center of the composition, a brightly colored calavera is accompanied by citrus fruit and a shot glass presumably filled with tequila or mezcal, creating a playful arrangement of color, texture, and familiar objects.

Casey contrasts the striking yellows and greens of the still life against a deep blue background, allowing the skull to command attention. Expressive decoration gives the skull a distinctive personality, while the carefully observed fruit and glass anchor the scene in the traditions of classical still-life painting.

Cesar Santander’s Soup Can Girl combines Pop Art imagery with the artist’s distinctive approach to hyperrealism. Torn pieces of paper show two different images laying scattered, from which a woman’s face emerges. Any lover of 20th century American art will see the uneasiness in the pale blue eyes and recognize the fragmented face as that of Roy Lichtenstein’s 1964 painting Nurse. The other scraps show that, prior to being ripped up, they once formed one of Andy Warhol‘s Campbell’s soup can paintings, arguably the most iconic works of pop art that the movement produced.

Santander has merged two of the most iconic visual styles of the pop art movement into a single, vibrant, transformative work. Warhol’s bright colors and stenciled lettering draw from commercial advertisements and packaging. Santander has them completely envelop the face of Lichtenstein’s Nurse, executed with the precise, almost pointillist technique characteristic of comics and pulp magazines. Everything being ripped to pieces and scattered across the canvas leave the viewer wondering if there is some deeper meaning present, if we could only somehow look deeper into those concerned, blue eyes.
