In the late 1960s Richard Estes emerged, along with a number of other like-minded artists who were working in a highly realistic style that in many ways was a response to the minimalist and other pervasive abstract styles of the day.

As a recognized leader in the contemporary movement that became known as Photorealism, his work has been seen with ever-increasing frequency in exhibitions presented by museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe.

During the late 1960s and through the 1970s it was the urban landscape that most captivated the artist. Estes was struck with wonderment by the variety of the city and the reflections created by the massive amounts of glass building fronts.

“NYC Parking Lot” illustrates the artist’s interest in capturing these effects by depicting a group of cars and the distorted reflections of the city around them. Working from photographs, the artist recreates and often readjusts the images once the composition is underway.

On his use of the camera, Estes wrote, “the camera is like one eye and it really deals only with values. And painting is trickery, because you can make people respond by guiding their eyes around the picture.”

Join us for an evening of conversation between artist, Coco Fusco and art historian and critic, Eva Díaz.

At this event you’ll hear discussion around Afrofuturist time, and the ways art can be a powerful tool to redress economic, gender, and racial violence, as well as ecological injustices.

Artist Coco Fusco has explored anachronism and cultural inequality throughout her career and in her artwork titled “Undiscovered Amerindians”. Eva Díaz is the author of the book “After Spaceship Earth: Art, Techno-utopia, and Other Science Fictions” (Yale University Press, 2025).

It’s the final week to see “Past as Prologue: A Historical Acknowledgment, Part II”.

A group of over 40 artists in the exhibition address issues of social and political inequity that have long shaped U.S. cultural life: civil rights, racial justice, gender equity, and economic justice, with a number of artworks highlighting the emotional labor that is asked of communities who have been historically othered.

On view through this Saturday, April 26.
