“Woodworker Girl”, 2026, acrylic on canvas, 100 x 80 cm.
This work is a homage to George Nakashima, a master craftsman for whom I hold the deepest respect. Several years ago, I became captivated by the beauty and philosophy of his furniture. Since then, I have been gradually collecting his pieces to use in my daily life. I have long envisioned incorporating his influence into my own work, and I am delighted to have finally brought this vision to life.
The inspiration for this piece stems from two visual memories. A childhood photograph of George’s daughter, Mira Nakashima, and a photo of actress Yuriko lshida’s home, where a cat is perched on the arm of a Nakashima Lounge Armchair.
Through this work, I wish to express my respect for craftsmanship that carries a steadfast conviction across eras and generation, while also keeping the concept of sustainability in mind. Furthermore, it reflects a personal curiosity. During my days at art preparatory school, I frequently practiced figure drawing by depicting women seated in chairs. I wanted to see how my current self would interpret that same motif today.
The painting is currently exhibited at the gallery as part of Kohei Yamada solo exhibition.
