“We belong, don’t we?”

First rehearsal of Eugene O’Neill’s THE HAIRY APE, directed by Ciaran O’Reilly.

We were thrilled to welcome the cast and creative team today, including so many new company members. Our first read-through transported us straight into Yank’s world, and we have a feeling this is going to be a great one.

Happy opening, ULSTER AMERICAN!

Today, Irish Rep's production of David Ireland's ULSTER AMERICAN begins its sold-out run at the Abbey Theatre!

This is an incredibly proud moment for Irish Rep—our co-founders, Artistic Director Charlotte Moore and Producing Artistic Director Ciarán O'Reilly (who also directs this production), our cast and company, and our board and staff. It truly takes a village to reach a moment like this.

Our deepest thanks to the Abbey Theatre's own remarkable village for their extraordinary hospitality, professionalism, expertise, and care. We are so incredibly proud to be on the Abbey stage!

Wishing our brilliant cast—Max Baker, Matthew Broderick, and Geraldine Hughes— and everyone at Irish Rep and the Abbey who helped bring this production to the stage a wonderful opening.

Here are a few glimpses of this exciting next chapter, onstage and off.

Twenty-five years after it first appeared at Irish Rep, Eugene O’Neill’s landmark expressionist drama returns to the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage in an all-new production, once again directed by Ciaran O’Reilly. This is one you won’t want to miss.

As head coal stoker on an ocean liner, Yank is in his element—he rules his dark world; he powers the ship; he belongs. But when the beautiful, spoiled daughter of the ship’s owner visits the engine room for a thrill, she is at once repulsed and terrified by Yank and what she sees there. Half in love with the unattainable and half blinded by rage, the bewildered Yank blunders violently through Manhattan, seeking both revenge and a place in a society which continually refuses him.

🎟 Member tickets are available now. Public on sale begins Tuesday, August 11 at 1pm.

Stay tuned for an exciting casting announcement coming soon!

Happy closing to the company of THE LOVED ONES!

As we celebrate the final performance, we’re so grateful for the incredible response to Erica Murray’s play this summer. Brought to our Mainstage with great care by director Nicola Murphy Dubey, it has been a joy to see audiences embrace the production.

A huge thank you to the entire company, everyone behind the scenes who made the production possible, and our community for continuing to support vital new work. We were also proud to partner with Broadway Babysitters to offer Irish Rep’s first free childcare matinee.

The play’s journey began in our New Works Reading Series, and we’re grateful to the audiences who joined us at those earliest stages and helped shape the work as it grew. Keep an eye out for our next New Works Reading Series announcement!
