The Theatre Arts major at Kingsborough Community College offers students a varied, liberal arts based introduction to the art of theatre, through traditional lecture-style classes, conservatory style studio classes and a full production season. The theatre major course of study begins with a core of six courses that provides theatre students with the necessary foundation in theatre studies: Introduction to Theatre, Play Analysis, Acting I, Introduction to Technical Theatre, History of Theatre I and Production Practicum. Following the completion of the core, students may concentrate in either Performance or Technical Theatre, both of which allow students to select electives relevant to the student’s specific area of interest. In conjunction with the Production Practicum course, the theatre program produces a season of theatrical productions and workshops each academic year, allowing students to put into practice what has been outlined in the classroom. The program offers two mainstage productions each year, a play in the fall semester and a musical in the spring semester, each produced in our 299-seat Lighthouse Theater. In addition, laboratory productions are presented in our Acting Studio each semester, where students replicate an ensemble theatre company model that is student driven and student centered. Lastly, students are also encouraged to join the student run theatre club which offers master classes, workshops, and social activities for any Kingsborough student who is interested in theatre, regardless of major. The Theatre Arts program is actively involved in The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, which offers additional opportunities for master classes, internships, and expanding the student’s theatrical community. Selected Kingsborough students travel to the regional festival each winter to participate in a week of programming and have previously garnered several honors, awards and scholarships. in Theatre Arts degree are designed to transfer to all CUNY four-year colleges, SUNY colleges, plus other private colleges and universities, many of which have established articulation agreements with Kingsborough.
