Japan Performing Arts, Inc. (JPA) announces its free public program: “Traditional Japanese Kabuki Dance Performance & Kimono.”

This event will introduce classical Japanese dance as well as details about each piece. The classical dances include “Fuji Musume” (Wisteria Maiden), “Komori” (The Babysitter), “Shichifukujin” (Seven Gods of Good Fortune), and a creative dance performed by three dancers to the melody of Tsugaru shamisen titled “Hyakka” . There will also be a creative dance performed to piano music. Between the dances, the program will present details about the traditional Japanese garment kimono, Japan’s national attire, and explain how kimono relates to Japanese dance. In addition, this event will introduce Yūzen, one of Japan’s highly skilled and celebrated kimono dyeing crafts.

Please be sure to make a reservation through Eventbrite. However, this does not guarantee you a seat. Seating for this performance is on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Once the theater reaches full capacity, no additional audience members will be admitted. If you wish to see the performance, please arrive at the theater early.

Japan Performing Arts, Inc. (JPA) announces its free public program: “Traditional Japanese Kabuki Dance Performance & Workshop.” This time, a Japanese dance workshop will also be held in the theater.

For the performance, three dancers will each present one classical piece: “Fuji Musume” (Wisteria Maiden), “Matsu no Midori” (Green Pines), and “Shima no Sensai.” These three works are very famous pieces in the Japanese dance repertoire.

“Fuji Musume” expresses the emotions of a young woman.

“Matsu no Midori” is a celebratory dance performed at festive occasions; it has a masculine style.

“Shima no Sensai” is named after a dancer who, a thousand years ago, was granted permission to perform before the Imperial Court. The dance style imitates Noh dance and is performed in a gender-neutral manner.

After the performance, a workshop on Japanese dance will be held. If you own a yukata, please bring it with you. Before learning the dance movements, participants will learn how to put on a yukata. For those who do not have one, a demonstration will be provided so you can observe how it is worn.

Afterward, the workshop will continue with basic walking and movement techniques used in Japanese dance.

There will be two sessions, at 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM. Each session lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes. The door opens at 2:10PM for the event at 2:30PM & 5:10PM for the event at 5:30PM

If you have a yukata, please be sure to bring it.

Japan Performing Arts, Inc. will have our Traditional Japanese Kabuki Dance Recital (Nihon Buyout) on Saturday, December 27th 2025 at Opera America in Manhattan.  The recital is from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm.

P.S. 

If you are interested in the Japanese traditions, please watch the film "Kokuho -National Treasure." This film is a major hit in Japan, and going to be released in the US soon.   It is a human drama set against the backdrop of Kabuki and Nihon Buyo.

Japan Performing Arts, Inc. (JPA) please to announce our Free Public Program "Ages of Enchantment 2025" at Peter Jay Sharp Theatre of Symphony Space on Saturday, November 15th 2025.  

For reservation, please book through Eventbrite.  

Please note that making reservation doesn't mean that your seat is garantee.  We recommend your eailer arrival at the theater.   

The show starts at 5 pm.  The doors open at 4:30 pm.   The duration of the show is 2 hours.
