✊🏾They scattered us across an ocean. They could not scatter what we carried.
🗺️This archival map, “African Cultures in the New World,” traces the points of arrival and dispersion of African peoples across the hemisphere. The same nations landed on different shores. Yoruba. Congo. Fon. Dahomey. Harlem is on it too.

Juneteenth is one chapter of this story. A US chapter. And it belongs on the same map as every act of liberation across the African Diaspora.

For 50 years, CCCADI has held this map together. This Juneteenth, we invite you to walk it with us.

Today we enter the Archival Time Machine and travel to CCCADI’s 1999 Celebración Colombiana 🇨🇴 in order to honor the iconic Totó la Momposina, who became an ancestor this week, after a life spent building an outstanding Afro-Caribbean musical legacy.

Totó hailed- as did her ancestors- from the Colombian village of Talaigua, at the heart of an island in the great Magdalena river, called Mompos (hence “la Momposina”).

“The music I play”, explained Totó, “has its roots in a mixed race; being African and Native Indian, the heart of the music is completely percussive”. 🪘

Totó presented rhythms like cumbia, bullerengue, chalupa, garabato and mapale from Colombia’s Caribbean coast alongside the Cuban son, guaracha, rumba and bolero that arrived in Colombia via the village of San Basilio de Palenque.

A magnificent singer and dancer born into a family of musicians spanning five generations, Totó earned respect and admiration in many parts of the world for the power and spontaneity of her performance.

Ibayé, Totó la Momposina!

Our Celebración Colombiana program took place at Aaron Davis Hall on October 9th, 1999. Along with Totó, the program featured performances from the Lucho Bermudez Orchestra and Foncho Castellar y su Conjunto Típico Vallenato. 🇨🇴

***UPDATE on 5/11/26***

Community,

CCCADI has made the intentional decision to postpone ÀJỌṢE: A Diaspora Symposium on Collective Healing & Freedom as we continue to navigate an active 50th anniversary season.

In honoring the collectivity & sustainability at the heart of ÀJỌṢE itself, we believe this gathering deserves more time to fully come into form.

We remain committed to bringing ÀJỌṢE to life, and we thank our facilitators, vendors, partners, and community for their continued belief in this offering. We look forward to sharing new details with our community soon.
