“In these unprecedented times, the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) stands in solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters facing escalating hostility, displacement, and systemic injustice.

As daughters and sons of immigrants, we know migration is an act of survival, resilience, and hope. Committed to cultural equity, historical memory, and tradition, we recognize migration as a defining link in our shared history—interwined with resistance, dignity, and the pursuit of justice.”

Our 2025 season of “We Lit” got off to a powerful start with the launch of author Ibi Zoboi’s new fantasy novel: “(S)kin”. Thank you to and to her conversation partners and for such an inspiring exchange, to for their pop up book shop, and to the community that joined us and engaged in the discussion.

May we continue to celebrate the magic and the stories that unite us as people of the Caribbean and African Diaspora.

We Lit is a CCCADI series dedicated to exploring authors of the African Diaspora who have beautifully woven their experiences, cultures, and dreams into their works. This series is a call to writers, griots, storytellers, and lovers of the written word to spark collective conservation, reflection, and celebration for African Diasporic literature.

In case you missed it on Thursday, here is La Letra del Año 2025 (Odu of the Year). We are grateful, as always, to our panelists, moderator, staff and attendees.

Every year, CCCADI hosts a panel of Lucumi priests (oluwos, oba oriates, and oloshas) for an evening of multi-generational dialogue on the cultural, social, and philosophical implications of the long-standing tradition La Letra del Año or Odu of the Year.

La Letra del Año or Odu of the Year is a forecast offered to the community as a result of the Lucumi divination ceremony held by a council of babalawos in Cuba. Announced on January 1st, this “reading” provides a sacred blueprint and predictions for the year ahead.

CCCADI’s Sacred Traditions: Letra del Año panel discussion centers the collective wisdom of the Lucumi community in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, in response to this annual tradition. This program is not a divination ceremony nor meant to replace the wisdom and guidance of Lucumí elders and practitioners across the globe who also divine on behalf of their countries, regions, and iles (religious houses and temples) and country-specific associations.

The discussion for the 2025 program was led by:

Guest Speakers:
Oluwo Joseph Caroll-Miranda
Oluwo Raymond Crawford
Oluwo Ramin Khorassani
Oluwo John McCoy
Oba Oriate Frank Bell
Oba Oriate Danny Rodriguez

Moderator:
Marinieves Alba, Olo-Obatala

Did you know this was the reason why the Lucumi tradition in Cuba reveals La Letra del Año on January 1st while the Isese tradition in Yorubaland reveals the Odu of the Year in June?

Join us virtually this Thursday at 7pm EST and let’s continue to preserve the traditions that our ancestors gifted us in our first Sacred Traditions event for 2025. All are welcome!

Just this past Wednesday, January 1st, Ifá priests in Cuba unveiled the Letra that resulted from their yearly-held divination ceremony, and there is a lot to be discussed! With that being said, we are excited and honored to announce the panel for this year’s Letra del Año:
