iscp - International Studio & Curatorial Program ISCP is a residency-based contemporary art center for emerging to mid-career artists and curators

The International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) is a leading, nonprofit residency-based contemporary art center in the United States for emerging to mid-career artists and curators from around the world. Founded in 1994, ISCP has hosted over 1,000 artists and curators from more than 50 countries, including the United States. In 2008, ISCP moved from Manhattan to East Williamsburg, Brooklyn to the former factory of the Sackett & Wilhelms Lithography Company, an 18,000 square-foot building constructed in 1901. This move expanded ISCP's facilities to 36 studios, an exhibition gallery and a project space. To advance its core mission of supporting artists in producing and exhibiting a wide range of contemporary, often experimental, artistic approaches, ISCP recently launched a series of innovative exhibitions and public programs both on- and off-site. ISCP’s programming engages audiences in meaningful ways while fostering the institution’s relationship to its community. Each year, over 100 artists and curators are in residence at ISCP and approximately 10,000 individuals attend ISCP’s public programs.

The International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) presents ‘The Skin of the Earth Is Seamless,’ a group exhibition bringing together eight artists—Seba Calfuqueo, Magdalena Ciemierkiewicz, Verónica Gaona, Gi (Ginny) Huo, Simon Liu, Brenda Mallory, Kara Springer, and Nardeen Srouji—who approach borders from distinct geographic, cultural, and historical positions. Rather than representing them primarily as geopolitical lines, the artists focus on what happens around and across them: what is interrupted, what endures, and what is transformed or remade.

Join us for the opening reception on Tuesday, October 27 from 6–8pm.

The exhibition takes its title from Gloria Anzaldúa’s seminal book ‘Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza’ (1987), in which her understanding of borderlands extends beyond geography to encompass cultural, linguistic, psychological, and spiritual experiences. At a moment of intensified nationalism, forced displacement, and increasingly restrictive border regimes, the exhibition asks not only what borders divide, but what moves through them, endures despite them, and connects across them. The works consider repair not as an erasure of rupture, but as an ongoing practice of adaptation and resistance.

‘The Skin of the Earth Is Seamless’ is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue featuring an essay by Melinda Lang, ISCP’s Director of Programs and Exhibitions, and a resource bibliography by Nicolas Poblete, Programs and Exhibitions Intern.

Kick off the fall season with us at ISCP! Next Tuesday, October 6, from 6:30–7:30pm, join us for Artists at Work, where artist-in-residence Madeleine Andersson will present her thought-provoking performative lecture, 'Toilet Science and the Rise of Sewer Protestantism.'

Beginning with the proposition that “the thing called civilization began not with the advent of written language but with the first toilet,” Andersson will trace the historical relationship between the human body and modern sewer systems. She will examine how the development of waste-management infrastructure reshaped sensory experience and ideas about cleanliness, morality, and the body, and consider these transformations in relation to shifting social, spiritual, and political structures governing bodily waste.

About the artist 🗣️

Andersson's practice proposes alternative historizations and speculative structures to expose and disrupt the psychosocial dimensions of knowledge production. Her multidisciplinary work across video, sculpture, and performance brings together academic discourse, scientific instruments, pseudoscientific excitement, social media, and horror films in playful installations. Through these unexpected combinations, Andersson investigates the intersection of science and pop culture, self-experimentation, quests for inner truth, and encounters with perversion.

Next Tuesday❗Join us at ISCP from 6:30–7:30pm for Artists at Work with ISCP artist-in-residence Yao Qingmei and curator Xiaoyu Weng. They will discuss the development of Yao’s performance and moving-image practice, from early works in which she used her own body to intervene in everyday reality to her evolving engagement with performers and the camera and with the embodied presence of the audience. They will also consider her interest in rehearsal, repetition, and bodily control, and how these relate to labor and vulnerability.

About the speakers 🗣️

Yao Qingmei is an artist based between Paris and Wenzhou, China, working across video, performance, and installation. Her practice stages choreographed situations prone to breakdown, exploring the tension between control and instability as bodies confront systems of rules and constraint. Drawing on cinematic language, physical gestures, and scenographic frameworks, she transforms everyday actions into performative situations that expose power dynamics and moments of vulnerability.

Based in New York and Kassel, Germany, Xiaoyu Weng is co-curating the upcoming Documenta 16. She is the director of Art in General in New York, and from 2021-2023 she was Head of the Modern and Contemporary Art department at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in Toronto, Canada. Previously, she served as Associate Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim in New York also curated the fifth Ural Industrial Biennial in 2018–19 in Yekaterinburg. From 2010 to 2015, she held the position of director and curator of Asia Programs at Kadist Art Foundation, Paris and San Francisco.

Inside studio 215: Stacey de Voe (@/re___voe)

Swedish artist Stacey de Voe uses site-specificity and the archive to investigate broader issues concerning textile histories, collective memory, feminized labor, and friendship. Not bound to a specific medium, she utilizes installation, moving image, performance, printmaking, and publication. Through an assemblage of artisanal and mass-produced objects, de Voe allows divergent historical residues to connect and disconnect, opening up new relations and meanings.
