💕🇵🇭 A gift from the divine ✨

Among the Mandaya people of Davao Oriental, the skill of weaving is regarded as a sacred privilege, traditionally believed to be a gift passed directly from the gods to the women of the community.

This spiritual legacy is woven into intricate textiles that embody Mandaya identity and artistic heritage. Beyond their exceptional craftsmanship, these pieces stand as a powerful reflection of the community’s deep spiritual connection to their land.

Come take a closer look at this stunning work in our 4F exhibition, “Skeins of Knowledge, Threads of Wisdom.”

Come and Join us for the Visibilize-ing Care Festival March 4th - 6th.
https://parsons.edu/carelab/festival/

Worldwide we are experiencing a crisis of care - deteriorating mental health, inadequate care for children and aging populations and their caregivers, unequal access to quality health services, an eroding social safety net, climate disasters, and rising polarization, hate crimes and political violence. The Visibilize-ing Care Festival is a symposium and exhibition featuring interdisciplinary work of students, faculty, staff and alumni who are creatively and critically exploring care in society. Panel Details

Title and Description

“Upcycling and Repair as Forms and Functions of Care” follows the narratives of reuse initiatives in New York City from activism to grassroots organization to formalization. Regardless of the scale in which their communities have grown, our panelists will highlight how care is not lost in their efforts to normalize reuse. As enthusiasts become practitioners and then organizers, these movements gained support and the agency to thrive against the backdrop of capitalism. At a time when immediacy and convenience dominate consumer habits, the narratives of patience and intention from this panel will inspire its audience to go forth and reuse again!

- Often, when we talk about the future of the fashion industry, innovation is spotlighted as the primary solution.

Innovation is defined as the process of bringing about new ideas, methods or solutions that bring positive impact and value. In many ways we are innovating our way out of the problem.

But does it have to exclusively be about generating new ideas?

Craft, in its many diverse forms, offers vital lessons for the future of the fashion industry. When it comes to responsible and ethical fashion, craft is one of the greatest solutions and it’s been here all along.

Many communities across the world have been sustainably creating fashion and textiles for centuries – using age-old practices that work in symbiosis with nature. Drawing from ancestral knowledge, preserving rich cultural heritage and traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Craft practices are also often circular by nature, with artisans reusing scrap materials, employing zero-waste design principles and generating less waste

This isn’t to say that innovation isn’t pivotal to building a more responsible and ethical industry. It’s just that many of the solutions already exist - and have for centuries.

Sustainable fashion isn’t a new concept. It’s just one that the Global North pushed aside for quicker, mass-produced alternatives. But if we look to craft communities around the world for inspiration we’ll find that sustainable fashion already exists in abundance.
