Dear Friends and Rockaway Community Members,

News just came out that our friend and collaborator Eric Peterson, Rockaway Parks Admin, has been reassigned to Marine Park in BK. While there have been some ups and downs, for the most part Eric has supported all of our ambitious and experimental endeavors for the last 5 years, allowing us to grow our ideas and businesses. When he came into the position, he continued to maintain many of the initiatives that his predecessor Portia Dyvenforth supported post-Sandy to rebuild the community. He not only oversaw the boardwalk and Rockaway Park beaches, but was working with National Parks, Riis Beach and GLITS to support People’s Beach.

This reassignment comes after neighbors in the area, mostly right around the Amphitheater on B94, have been complaining about his “excessive permitting.” Republican Councilwoman Joann Ariola has been supporting the complainers and pushing to get him out as well. Ariola wants more policing of the boardwalk and beaches.

While she technically doesn’t have the power to choose the next Rockaway Parks Admin, she’s going to try. This might mean that all of our projects that create safe spaces for all types of communities might be at risk.

We’re worried that Beach Sessions might not be able to continue under the new Admin. We’re worried that all the House/Caribbean/Reggae/Latino DJs and community groups won’t get permits for the amphitheater. We’re worried the Poseidon parade won’t get a permit, or our music festivals, surf competitions, etc.

The posting for the new Admin will be announced in the next couple of days, but we plan on writing to the NYC Parks Commissioner Susan Donoghue, [email protected], to thank what Portia and Eric have done to grow and support the community post Sandy and hope that the next Administrator is open to us and our initiatives.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this and what else we can do.

We want to thank everyone who came out to the beach for Faye Driscoll’s work Oceanic Feeling.

It has been an incredible journey watching Beach Sessions flourish over the past 10 years, and this performance was a beautiful testament to the amazing community we’ve built together.

Your enthusiasm and support have been the driving force behind our growth and success. Every summer has been a celebration of not only dance but of the connections and shared experiences that unite us.

We’re taking a moment to rest and reflect.
