Calling all teachers, choreographers, physical theatre artists, actors, and more! Join MTS this a summer for 5 weeks of physical theatre training, including Physical Storytelling with MTS founder Richard Crawford!

The mission of the Movement Theater Studio is to create a home for the teachings of Jacques Lecoq in New York.

MTS believes that there is no separation between the psychological and the physical actor. The most exciting performer is one who can engage their imagination fully while having a rigorously trained physical instrument through which these impulses can be dynamically expressed.

Physical Storytelling with Richard Crawford at Movement Theater Studio 💃 learn to tell the biggest stories on the smallest stages this summer at MTS

Physical Storytelling: Telling the richest of stories with the simplest of tools.

Using the body, voice and highly choreographed collective movement this workshop draws upon mime, heightened characterization, mimo-dymanics and vocal soundscapes to create a short original devised story. Five actors are placed upon a small raised platform and, borrowing techniques from film-making such as quick-cuts, zoom outs, slow motion and split-screens, are charged with taking care of every aspect of the story at hand to create a hyper-theatrical experience. The workshop also explores some of the central tenets of storytelling such as how the constraints of space provide narrative freedom, building a narrative arc, developing dramatic tension, alternating at lightning speed between differing archetypes and how sound completes the world of every story.

This workshop is for performers, directors and teachers who want to gain a solid arsenal of tools at the service of creating visually told, non-script based stories, accessible to all audiences. Richard Crawford develops a fun, warm and exacting classroom where everyone has a voice. By balancing clear instruction and demanding the total creative rigor, Richard strives to bring the best out of every student no matter their level of experience. By the end of this week you will have surprised yourself, made an original piece of theater and be able to turn right around and teach the skills to your theater company or classroom!

Hours: July 6th - 10th, 5 - 9 p.m.

Location: Brooklyn College Campus

Neutral Mask helps actors to confront their physical habits, discover essential gestures, and build an economy of movement needed for any performer!

Neutral Mask with Adrienne Kapstein

The study of Neutral Mask challenges the actor to use their entire body in expressing themselves on stage. Working with the mask enables the performer to discover essential gesture and an economy of movement as well as create a foundation and reference point for character. Through a series of improvisational and technical exercises the actor confronts their physical habits in order to move past the ‘daily’ body and enter the theatrical realm. The mask has no opinion but is alive and desires to engage, requiring the actor to undo their knowledge and bring their senses to bear in re-discovering the world around them. The study of the Neutral Mask is vital for actors wanting to gain a greater control over their body in movement, develop their imagination and bring a dynamic quality to their presence on stage.

The neutral masks is the best tool there is to help the actor find the greatest control over their body in space possible.

Hours: July 20th - 24th, 10am - 4pm (1hr off for lunch)
