Meet member: Jeroen Vos. In NY since 2023

What brought you to NY? My wife’s career. She works in fashion as a stylist.

Fav NYC experience? I love jazz and the scene that comes with it. Since we have a daughter, I often go alone. Smalls, Mezzrow, Blue Note, Terra Blues are some of my favorite spots. I’ve seen many great musicians there and enjoy relaxing with an Old Fashioned.

Surprised by? ...the number of homeless individuals. This has led me to volunteer at a homeless shelter in Hoboken. Since we don’t encounter this level of homelessness back home, it has given me a much better understanding of the situation and puts things into perspective.

Why the NL Club? Since I’m new to a city and feeling like a stranger, I sought out people with similar experiences. Connecting with them helps me better understand my own situation, even though each person’s experience is unique.

Recommended? Yes, I find the people to be engaged and willing to help. I appreciate meeting a variety of individuals who, like me, are either in a similar situation or have lived in the US for most of their lives.

Fav tradition that you’ve brought to NY? I’ve delved into the art of baking apple pies. At our daughter's birthday party, I made appeltaart met slagroom, and everyone loved it. Who would have thought!

Funny moment as a Dutch person trying to navigate life in NY? I ordered a banana-milkshake, and received just a banana with a request to specify the flavor I wanted for my milkshake. I’m not sure if I wasn’t clear enough or if there was a mix-up, but since then, I’ve always asked for a milkshake-banana and haven’t received any more whole bananas.

What is one thing about the Dutch culture that you wish more people understood? Directness is a form of engagement.

How has living in NY influenced your perspective on Dutch culture or identity? In the Netherlands, there is a higher degree of safety and security embedded in decision-making. In contrast, America feels more like a "go for it" attitude, where taking risks is appreciated. On the flip side, insurance costs are significantly higher here!

Go visit? Governor's Island

Fav restaurant/bar? Rosemary's/Swift Hibernian Lounge

Meet member: Shawn Kent

When did you move to NYC? February 2013

What brought you to NYC, and what keeps you here? Work. The excitement of the city. Friends.

What is your fav NYC experience and why? I'm all about views of this city, so taking a water ferry from FiDi up to Greenpoint because the views of Manhattan and Brooklyn skylines, the iconic bridges and the UN are incredible.

What aspect of your Dutchness has benefited you in your business or personal experience in NYC? The aspect of curiosity is the aspect that has benefited me in both business and personal life here in NYC. Amsterdam and Europe as a whole is multicultural and I enjoyed meeting and working with people with interesting cultural backgrounds. My curiosity for learning about others and their stories leads to stronger working relationships and the continuation of expanding my understanding and respect for people different from my own story. I become a more empathetic person while increasingly in awe of creation.

What drew you to the NL Club of NYC? Heard so much about it! :-)

Why would you recommend the NL Club to others? First, the number of regular events and special events is high. Second, the types of special events offer learning I would not have otherwise considered. Third, the events are fun with the highest level of professionalism.

How has living in NYC influenced your perspective on Dutch culture or identity? The Dutch are far too serious, judgmental and standoff-ish

What is/are your favorite subject(s) to talk about? Societal developments; Psychedelic drugs

What do you always recommend your visiting friends/family to do while in New York? Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge

What is your fav restaurant/bar? Marjorelle upper East / The Dead Rabbit - FiDi

Meet member: Kirsten van Embricqs

When did you move to NYC? 2018

What brought you to NYC, and what keeps you here? My determination to live in NY and a little help from work brought me here, and life in this wonderful city keeps me here.

What is your fav NYC experience and why? Early morning in Central Park in the snow-still waiting on that actual snowstorm though

What aspect of your Dutchness has benefited you in your business or personal experience in NYC? My honesty, directness and understanding European cultures have been a great asset in my work

What drew you to the NL Club of NYC? Getting to know other Dutchies in the city and what brought them here.

Why would you recommend the NL Club to others? Great place to meet others and chat about NY, Netherlands and just life!

Can you share a favorite memory or tradition from your Dutch upbringing that you’ve brought with you to NYC? Home cooked meals, which makes going out to dinner so much more special!

Can you share a funny or memorable moment you’ve experienced as a Dutch person trying to navigate life in NYC? Asking for McDonalds frietsaus (not mayo) and getting the “you’re just one of the crazies” look as they never heard of it before

What is one thing about the Dutch culture that you wish more people knew or understood? The mix of influences of Dutch, Surinam and American culture present in so much of our daily lives.

How has living in NYC influenced your perspective on Dutch culture or identity? More appreciation for some parts, less for others. However happy to be a Dutchie getting the best of both worlds.

What is/are your favorite subject(s) to talk about? Wine, movies, sports

What do you always recommend your visiting friends/family to do while in New York? Grab a bike and just enjoy the city

What is your fav restaurant? Scarpetta & the Polo Bar
