The Nippon Gallery at The Nippon Club

Susan Tosk (1944–2026) devoted her life to collecting and studying Japanese art spanning the Edo through Showa periods, with a particular love for the Meiji era. This fall, we present 44 Meiji-era masterworks selected from her collection in the memorial exhibition “Keen Vision — A Legacy of Susan Tosk.”

Featured here: a vase by Kinkozan (wisteria and mountain landscape), a commemorative textile by Takashimaya (1910), and a bronze incense burner by Jomi (Mt. Fuji and mountain village motifs).

📍 The Nippon Gallery（日本クラブ 5階）604 Fifth Ave., NY

Calligrapher Mohri Suzuki: “Calligraphy is not merely about beautiful characters. It is a way of facing oneself and imagining who we wish to become.”

Sun or Rain—on sunny and rainy days alike, let us share tea and talk. Through July 15. Free admission.

Take a Seat—finding a place of your own and simply sitting down.

Before smartphones—before pens—people carried brush and ink to write anywhere. The yatate made it possible. On view: 43 yatate from the Tsubame City Industrial Archives (Niigata), with works by Mohri Suzuki, Takashi Aoyagi, and Reiichi Namatame, plus inks inspired by ukiyo-e. Through July 15｜Free admission.

🖌 Do you know the yatate? It's the palm-sized writing case Edo travelers wore at the waist — Matsuo Bashō is said to have carried one on his Narrow Road to the Deep North.

This Thursday night, calligrapher and exhibition supervisor Mohri Suzuki speaks on the yatate and writing by hand, with a live demonstration.
Live from Tokyo: inkstone master Aoyagi Takashi (Hōkendō, 4th gen) — the only seikenshi in Japan, featured on Jōnetsu Tairiku and known for restoring Natsume Sōseki's inkstone.
