Compiled and directed by 5 time Tony nominee Douglas Carter Beane, and performed by Broadway’s finest comic actresses- Julie Halston, Ann Harada, Jackie Hoffman, and Anika Larsen, this once in a lifetime event explores the mad comedy and scathing insight of one of the great female writers of the last century. 🖊️ Poem In The American Manner - Dorothy Parker…

“I dunno yer highfalutin’ words, but here’s th’ way it seems
When I’m peekin’ out th’ winder o’ my little House o Dreams;
I’ve been lookin’ ‘roun’ this big ol’ world, as bizzy as a hive,
An’ I want t’ tell ye, neighbor mine, it’s good t’ be alive.
I’ve ben settin’ here, a-thinkin’ hard, an’ say, it seems t’ me
That this big ol’ world is jest about as good as it kin be,
With its starvin’ little babies, an’ its battles, an’ its strikes,
An’ its profiteers, an’ hold-up men—th’ dawggone little tykes!
An’ its hungry men that fought fer us, that nobody employs.
An’ I think, ‘Why, shucks, we’re jest a lot o’ grown-up little boys!’
An’ I settle back, an’ light my pipe, an’ reach fer Mother’s hand,
An’ I wouldn’t swap my peace o’ mind fer nothin’ in the land;
Fer this world uv ours, that jest was made fer folks like me an’ you
Is a purty good ol’ place t’ live—say, neighbor, ain’t it true?

🖊️ Dougie on Dottie 👇

I first discovered Mrs. Parker as many of us did - when other kiddies were out in the sun playing sports. But I, fairly alone in my middle school library, pulled a book off a shelf and found a soul I could love. Witty, acerbic, very aware of it all, but definitely hurting, I knew she was my girl. From then on I devoured anything I could find from Mrs. Parker. I accumulated acres and acres of material, some long out of print. A frustration in these years was hearing her work dismissed as “not as good as the things she said” or “the girl at the Algonquin roundtable” I could not disagree more. Her work is funny, sure, but it’s also poignant. It is exquisitely realized.

She was a first a writer of the 1920’s her creative output embodying New York at its buzzing best, By the thirties and with the depression raging, her work became more political. She ran to Hollywood and helped form the Writer’s Guild, received Two Academy award nominations. By the 40’s she was instrumental in getting American literature to soldiers in WW2 to remind them what they were fighting for. By the 50’s she was blacklisted by McCarthy, and by the 1960’s considered a relic, A female writer who was whimsical once. How shocked all were when she died and her estate was left to the NAACP.

But since her death her reputation has grown. New generations of readers discover her work anew with delight. The portable Dorothy Parker, the one created for soldiers in WW2 has never beeb out of print. Is it any wonder that It’s been my hope to one day find four gifted comedic actresses to go to town on this material?

Have a drink, enjoy some Dorothy Parker, give money to the NAACP. Times are tough right now. You deserve a treat. And in my opinion, this is the very best. - DCB
