Elevator Repair Service

Elevator Repair Service ERS is an experimental theater ensemble based in New York City. ERS' theater pieces are built around a broad range of subject matter and literary forms.

They combine elements of slapstick comedy, hi-tech and lo-tech design, both literary and found text, found objects and discarded furniture, and the group's own highly developed style of choreography. ERS creates its performances through extended periods of collaboration. Sources for the group's work include novels, non-fiction writings, films, plays, television programs, and various other media. E

ach ERS piece is developed over the course of a season through several work-in-progress showings to small audiences and culminates in an extended run in New York. ERS’ first show was presented in December 1991 and since 1997, its work has toured the United States and Europe. ERS has been seen all over downtown New York and has cultivated a loyal – and growing – following. The company has performed at Performance Space 122, The Performing Garage, HERE, The Ontological at St. Mark's Church, The Flea, The Kitchen, Soho Rep and New York Theatre Workshop. Abroad, ERS performances have been presented in Holland, Belgium, Slovenia, Austria, Norway, Germany, France, Portugal and Switzerland; and, in The United States, the ensemble has been presented in Philadelphia, Columbus, Seattle, Minneapolis, Houston, Burlington, Washington D.C. and Portland (OR).

ERS is thrilled to announce a special Ulysses post-performance event on Wednesday, February 11th, at The Public Theater.

Professor Catherine Flynn, writer and artist James Hannaham, and Professor Paul K. Saint-Amour will be in conversation with ERS Artistic Director and Ulysses director John Collins and Ulysses co-director and performer Scott Shepherd. This formidable group will discuss Joyce’s text and approaches to adaptation in ERS’s Ulysses as well as James Hannaham’s award-winning novel Didn’t Nobody Give a S**t What Happened to Carlotta. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A with audience members.

While the February 11th performance of Ulysses is currently sold-out, we encourage you to check The Public’s website closer to the date, as additional tickets may be released.

Ahead of the New York City premiere of Ulysses, ERS is excited to offer a reading group on Joyce’s famously difficult book!

Join Jonathan Goldman, president of the James Joyce Society and internationally recognized Joyce scholar, and Scott Shepherd, ERS ensemble member and co-director of ERS’s Ulysses, in what will be part reading group, part class.

Over the course of three months, Jonathan and Scott will walk participants through reading the novel (yes, the whole thing!) with particular emphasis on passages included in ERS’s staging. Reading group members will also have the opportunity to observe part of a Ulysses technical rehearsal at The Public theater.

All are welcome—whether you’re completely new to the novel, an avid re-reader, or an ERS fan wanting unique insight into the company’s process of adaptation.
