About the Lab: The Choreography Lab works to elevate and expand the use of dance in Musical Theatre.

The lab’s unique programming supports choreographer development, fosters collaboration between writers and choreographers earlier in the creative process,

and serves as an educational forum where all participating artists can strengthen and specify how dance can be used to convey story and character. The Choreography Lab is the only curated choreography platform where choreographers and writers collaborate to develop movement for new musicals during incubation.

Continuing to celebrate our 2025 Season!

In September, we presented a very special choreography lab. We received a grant from the NEA to produce a developmental lab of Jay Alan Zimmerman’s new song cycle, “Songs for Hands on a Thursday”. The lab featured the work of director , DASL , the choreographers and and a cast of truly exceptional performers.

We were also thrilled to have moderate our lab, sharing his experiences with us as a director / choreographer with .

All three of these shows had the opportunity to see what a number from their production would look like choreographed - many months or years before these shows will have a chance to be fully staged.

On October 6th we celebrated New York Theatre Barn at our annual awards night! We had a great time honoring members of our community and celebrating the development of new musical theatre!

Inspired by Barbara Leaming’s If This Was Happiness, Rita explores the life of iconic actress Rita Hayworth through the lens of her progressive Alzheimer’s Disease. The excerpts, I Loved to Dance with My Father and The Colors of Me, offered a dreamlike reflection of her life, brought to life with breathtaking choreography by and , performed by an exceptional cast:

At our September 2024 Lab, choreographer .lobel brought Tomorrow to life with their stunning choreography for “Share My Heart.” With book and lyrics by and music by Kristoffer Bjarke, this heartfelt musical explores the transformative power of human connection through a series of beautifully complex characters.

Our Spring 2024 Lab featured as our Moderator & choreographer , who brought vibrant energy to “Don’t Ya Wanna” from “Plane Girl”-a five person musical comedy with an all-women+ cast. The show tells a story of an aspiring pilot and Amelia Earhart fanatic, blending humor and heart.

During our September 2024 Lab, choreographer explored the raw energy and emotion of “A Rebel Prayer,” A feminist punk rock musical written by .m.weil & 🎶

Through a song called “A Call to Adventure” and with dancers , , and (not pictured), Shany’s choreography brought a powerful perspective through storytelling and movement.

Didn’t you know? and I are starting a comedy duo!

Just kidding :). Chaz was an absolutely wonderful guest moderator at our choreography lab on September 5th. He gave everyone kind, generous, and insightful feedback, and we were so lucky to have him with us.

I was so thrilled with the collaborations and interactions at this lab, and was also happy to see how many members of our lab community came out to support the choreographers and musicals.
