I first encountered Bangladesh's flamboyant cycle rickshaws on a work trip in 2012. Smitten with their intricate artistry, I snapped photos of their hand-painted motifs on my walks around Dhaka, and interacted with drivers - the wallahs. I was struck by the personal nature of this mode of transport, from the uniqueness of each rickshaw - an individual expression of the artist and driver - to the intimacy of the exchange between driver and passenger. Since then I’ve dreamt of having my own.
Finally, last year I commissioned a builder and one of Dhaka’s last remaining rickshaw artists to create this one-of-a-kind masterpiece: RickshawNYC, a three-wheeled “joy-sparker” that I hope serves as both a symbol of a cultural exchange as well as a universal vehicle for human connection. The vision is simple but, I think, necessary in today’s world: rides will not cost money. Instead, I simply ask my passengers to share a story.
For Bengalis in New York City - families strolling in the park, taxi drivers calling out from behind the wheel - the surreal sight of this thing has evoked powerful, happy feelings of home. For others, it’s an artifact of a far-flung place, or, if you’re a kid, perhaps just a marvelous sort of bike.
