Web Audio Conference 2024, 15-18, 2024

The four-day program will include papers, posters, talks, demos, workshops, installations, evening concerts, and late-night concerts, centered around the theme "spaces | places | traces:" transformation of spaces into meaningful places, capturing traces of human and non-human activities. While our focus is on works that resonate with the theme of "spaces | places | traces", we also welcome all topics relevant to web audio and beyond, especially for artworks. More details on website link below.

Keynote speaker: Hongchan Choi, Google
As a musician and engineer, Hongchan has been pushing the boundaries of the open web platform for music technology. From 2010 to 2014, he conducted his doctoral research at CCRMA, Stanford University under the supervision of Jonathan Berger, Chris Chafe, and Ge Wang. After finishing his doctoral thesis, “Collaborative Musicking on the Web,” he joined Google Chrome in 2014. There, he currently leads various projects as a Tech Lead and Manager. Outside of Google, Hongchan also serves as a co-chair of the W3C Audio Working Group, a collaborative effort of multiple industry professionals to design advanced audio capabilities for the web. He also maintains his academic ties as an Adjunct Professor at CCRMA since 2022.

Special Guests: Ahn Trio
The Ahn Trio will join WAC 24 for a special performance!

Concert at the Purdue Airport
We will be producing a concert at the Purdue Univ. Campus Airport! At least one concert will be held on Monday evening on March 18, 2024 which will also feature the Purdue Orchestra (please see below) lead by maestro Adam M. Bodony.

Purdue Univ. Orchestra
We are excited to announce that the Purdue Orchestra is now part of WAC 24! Please submit works for consideration (16, 16, 8, 16, 5: vln1/2, vla, vc, db) preferably without electronics and resonant with, but not limited to conference theme - spaces | places | traces.

Hybrid Conference Format
The conference is scheduled to take place in a hybrid format, allowing participants to optionally deliver oral presentations remotely. Additional information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

We are thrilled to announce the call for submissions for the Web Audio Conference (WAC) '24, taking place from March 15-17, 2024, at Purdue University. The theme for WAC is "spaces | places | traces," where spaces transform into places, leaving traces of both human and non-human activities, whether fleeting or permanent. With the blurring of physical and virtual spaces/places/traces, the possibilities for engagement, interaction, and accessibility have become a reality, regardless of location and time. Notably, the operating system-agnostic nature of web audio makes accessibility and inclusion an exciting prospect for exploring sound, audio, music, and computation. Furthermore, we aim to delve deeper into web audio's potential for environmental sound sensing, which includes capturing, processing, sensing, and streaming music performances, soundscapes, and urban noise pollution at the 2024 WAC conference.

The three-day program will encompass papers, posters, talks, demos, workshops, installations, evening concerts, and late-night concerts. While our focus is on works that align with the theme of space, place, and its traces, we also welcome all topics relevant to web audio, including:

Audio API, Web MIDI, Web RTC, and other existing or emerging web standards for audio and music

Development tools, practices, and strategies for web audio applications

Web-based music composition, production, delivery, and experience

Client-side audio engines and audio processing/rendering (real-time or non-real-time)

Cloud/HPC for music production and live performances Audio data and metadata formats and network delivery

Server-side audio processing and client access

IoT, environmental sensing, and sound mapping

Frameworks for audio synthesis, processing, and transformation

Web-based audio visualization and/or sonification

Multimedia integration

Web-based live coding and collaborative environments for audio and music generation

Web standards and the use of standards within audio-based web projects

Hardware and tangible interfaces and human-computer interaction in web applications

CODECS and standards for remote audio transmission

Any other innovative work related to web audio that does not fit into the above categories

The submission deadline for papers, posters, talks, demos, workshops, installations, and concert works is January 7, 2024 (Sunday).
