From rehearsal rooms to board retreats, Moment Work is everywhere! During our Tectonic Board retreat in upstate New York, company members Barbara Pitts McAdams and Scott Barrow led a Moment Work session to give our Directors a look short glimpse of our devising classrooms across the country. A big thank you to our Board for flexing their creativity and dreaming big with us!

Over the past 2 weeks we’ve been engaged in a beautiful collaboration with Liesl Tommy, Jennifer Mudge, Jacob Climer, Katy Tucker, and Tectonic Company Member Stephen Belber on his new piece, “What Do We Do With The Dead.” Thanks to Chris Burney, Ruth Fisher, and Kay & Bill Gurtin, this new production found its first life in homes around the city. Enjoy these shots from our newest project, a homecoming for Steve about which we are deeply proud!

How do we deal with grief, loss, and the friendships that bring you so much and cost you so dearly? And how does a writer who fabricates for a living actually say something true? And funny. In ideally under 75 minutes? These are the questions that Stephen Belber (The Laramie Project, The Madness, Tape, Match) tackles in “What Do We Do With The Dead,” a play that lasts approximately 74 minutes, tracking the friends he’s loved, lost, and, quite possibly, found again.

Last month, twelve University of Arkansas M.F.A. Theatre students who have been studying Moment Work since 2023 presented their original devised play, Bookends, as part of the Arkansas New Play Festival. Over three years (and more than 250 hours!), these students worked alongside Tectonic teaching artists and company members to learn our process of devising and create a piece of their own.

John Walch, associate professor and head of the U of A’s M.F.A. playwrighting program, said “Tectonic was a remarkable partner. They opened our students to new modes of working and empowered them to see themselves as artists both within our community and beyond…The Moment Work training for this cohort began in their first semester and concluded in their final semester, making it a fitting bookend to their graduate studies here.”

Let’s give these students a round of applause for all of their beautiful work!

Our Moment Work Institute made it all the way to Denmark! This month, Tectonic Company Member Scott Barrow led a Moment Work residency facilitated by and hosted at The Danish National School of Performing Arts. Over 4 days, 12 participants (professional actors, directors, and artists) learned our Moment Work process for devising new work, and explored how all elements of the stage work together to create strong theatrical narratives from the ground up.

So what *is* devised theater? In this article originally printed in The Dramatist in 2015, John Collins, Eric Dyer, Moisés Kaufman, and Winter Miller discuss what “devising” means to them and how devising looks different in each of their work. Happy closing to Here There Are Blueberries at ! This production marked the show’s UK debut, and we are so grateful to everyone who made this premiere possible! Tectonic Artistic Director Moisés Kaufman said: “Bringing Here There Are Blueberries to the Stratford East was incredibly special to me and Tectonic. Their founding Artistic Director, Joan Littlewood, had a radical vision of theatre as a space for collective inquiry, social responsibility, and formal experimentation. This vision has had a profound influence on Tectonic’s work. To share this play in a theatre shaped by her legacy—one committed to questioning authority, engaging its community, and expanding what theatre can be—has been both an honour and a homecoming.” Stay tuned for a published script coming in Spring 2026–soon to be available for licensing through Concord Theatricals!

"Strikingly, of all the photographs in Höcker’s album, not one shows an inmate of the camp. 'They really are the selfies of an SS officer,' says Amanda Gronich, an American writer who specialises in adapting true stories for stage and screen. 'And I don’t mean that glibly. I mean that [taking selfies] was precisely what they were doing.' As artless as holiday snaps, the photos are shocking in their blithe depiction of apparently carefree life going on alongside one of the most notorious killing machines in history." Read the full Telegraph article on the photo album that inspired Here There Are Blueberries, and catch the show at East Stratford from Jan 31–Feb 28.

Kept hidden for decades, these chillingly carefree snapshots of camp personnel at leisure force the viewer to walk in the Nazis’ shoes
