Earlier this month, Senator Cory Booker led a Congressional forum that addressed the dangers and antitrust concerns of the proposed Paramount merger with Warner Bros. Discovery.

At the hearing, Michael Isaac, WGAE Director of Legal Services, used his opening remarks to address the impact the initial Paramount-Skydance merger had on CBS News workers, press freedom, late night television, and diversity initiatives. He laid out how those harms would only increase under a combined Paramount-WBD, which would immediately become the largest employer of our members — a media behemoth with tremendous leverage to reduce content, raise prices, increase control of production, suppress member compensation, worsen working conditions – and silence the voices of our members.

In addition to Booker, the forum featured questioning from Senators Schumer, Hirono, Warren, Schiff, Durbin, Padilla, Blumenthal, and Rep. Raskin.

The other witnesses to appear were Mark Ruffalo, David Borenstein (Filmmaker, Mr. Nobody Against Putin), Katie Phang (Lawyer, Legal Analysist and Journalist with the MeidasTouch Network) and Mara Verheyden-Hilliard (Co-founder and Executive Director of the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund & Steering Committee Member of the Committee for the First Amendment).

Thank you, Senator Booker and the Democratic Senate Judiciary Committee for leading this forum and fighting to ensure this proposed merger receives the public scrutiny it deserves.

The WGA membership has ratified the 2026 MBA, with 90.38% (4,282) voting in favor. In the face of industry contraction and runaway healthcare cost inflation, writers were able to secure a contract that returns our Health Fund to a sustainable path and builds on gains from 2023. Now, we will turn to the core work of enforcing the MBA and ensuring writers are paid properly for our work, as we monitor the industry trends around streaming and AI.

WGA Statement on Warner Bros. Discovery Shareholder Vote to Approve Paramount Merger:

The proposed merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery would be a disaster for writers, the entertainment industry, consumers, and the country. While shareholders approved this deal today, this merger is far from final. This proposed acquisition is exactly what our nation’s antitrust laws are designed to prevent. We are confident CA Attorney General Rob Bonta and his fellow State Attorneys General will investigate this transaction fully and follow the law.

Every time media and entertainment companies merge, they promise lower prices, more choices for consumers, increased production, and improvements for workers. And every time those promises are broken; the mergers instead result in higher prices, fewer choices, significant job loss, and suppression of underrepresented voices and stories.

The Writers Guild of America urges antitrust enforcers to intervene and stop further harms to competition in an already consolidated industry. This merger can and must be blocked.

Keeping our Health Fund on a sustainable path wasn’t the only priority for the 2026 MBA. The Negotiating Committee was able to win new terms that put money in our pockets by raising minimums, improving residuals, and resisting disastrous rollbacks from the studios.
