Helga Paris (1938–2024) è stata una delle fotografe documentarie più importanti della Germania Est. Nata come Helga Steffens a Gollnow, Pomerania — oggi Goleniów, Polonia — si trasferì con la famiglia nei dintorni di Berlino dopo la fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Tra il 1956 e il 1960 studiò design di moda, lavorando poi come grafica e costumista prima di dedicarsi completamente alla fotografia.

Autodidatta, cominciò a fotografare intorno al 1967, ispirata dal cinema, dal teatro e dalla pittura moderna. Stabilitasi nel quartiere berlinese di Prenzlauer Berg, trovò nella vita quotidiana il cuore della sua opera: operai, donne lavoratrici, giovani, bar, stazioni, strade popolari. I suoi scatti in bianco e nero si distinguono per uno sguardo profondamente umano, intimo e rispettoso verso chi ritraeva. 🇬🇧 📸Helga Paris (1938–2024) was one of the most significant documentary photographers to emerge from East Germany. Born Helga Steffens in Gollnow, Pomerania — now Goleniów, Poland — she grew up near Berlin after her family was displaced at the end of WWII. She studied fashion design between 1956 and 1960, working as a graphic designer and costume artist before turning fully to photography.

Self-taught, she picked up a camera around 1967, drawn in by cinema, theatre, and modern painting. Settling in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood, she found her subject matter in the everyday life of the GDR: workers, women, youth, bars, train stations, ordinary streets. Her black-and-white images are marked by a gaze that is deeply human, intimate, and dignified.

«Lasciatemi dire la verità sul nostro tempo e sulla gente del nostro tempo.» Nel 1927 August Sander fotografò tre giovani contadini diretti a una festa di paese. L’immagine, oggi nota come Young Farmers, è diventata una delle fotografie più celebri del XX secolo. Ciò che colpisce è il contrasto tra la loro eleganza ostentata e la semplicità delle origini rurali: in un solo scatto Sander riuscì a raccontare una trasformazione sociale in corso nella Germania dell’epoca. 📸
